Reforming Senates Upper Legislative Houses in North Atlantic Small Powers 1800-present

No Exit North Korea Nuclear Weapons and International Security

No Exit North Korea Nuclear Weapons and International Security

This book chronicles the political-military development of the Korean Peninsula since 1945 with particular attention to North Korea‘s pursuit of nuclear technology and nuclear weapons and how it has shaped Northeast Asian security and non-proliferation policy and influenced the strategic choices of the United States and all regional powers. I focus on North Korea‘s leaders institutions political history and the system‘s longer-term prospects. How has an isolated highly idiosyncratic small state repeatedly stymied or circumvented the policy preferences of much more powerful states culminating with its withdrawal from the Non Proliferation Treaty (the only state ever to do so) and the testing of nuclear weapons in open defiance of adversaries and allies alike? What does this portend for the region‘s future? Unlike most of the literature that focuses on US non proliferation policy this is a book about decision making in North Korea and the state‘s survival in the face of daunting odds. It draws on extensive interviews with individuals in China South Korea Japan Russia and the EU who have had ample experience in and with North Korea additional interviews with former US policy makers and the results from two visits to the North. The author makes extensive use of archival materials from the Cold War International History Project enabling a far fuller rendering of North Korean history than appears in most of the literature on the North Korean nuclear weapons issue. | No Exit North Korea Nuclear Weapons and International Security

An Introduction to Native North America

The Archaeology of Native North America

The Archaeology of Native North America

The Archaeology of Native North America presents the ideas evidence and debates regarding the initial peopling of the continent by mobile bands of hunters and gatherers and the cultural evolution of their many lines of descent over the ensuing millennia. The emergence of farming urban centers and complex political organization paralleled similar developments in other world areas. With the arrival of Europeans to North America and the inevitable clashes of culture colonizers and colonists were forever changed which is also represented in the archaeological heritage of the continent. Unlike others this book includes Mesoamerica and the Caribbean thus addressing broad regional interactions and the circulation of people things and ideas. This edition incorporates results of new archaeological research since the publication of the first edition a decade earlier. Fifty-four new box features highlight selected archaeological sites which are publicly accessible gateways into the study of North American archaeology. The features were authored by specialists with direct knowledge of the sites and their broad importance. Glossaries are provided at the end of every chapter to clarify specialized terminology. The book is directed to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students taking survey courses in American archaeology as well as other advanced readers. It is extensively illustrated and includes citations to sources with their own robust bibliographies leading diligent readers deeper into the professional literature. The Archaeology of Native North America is the ideal text for courses in North American archaeology.

Foreign Policy in North Africa Navigating Global Regional and Domestic Transformations

Foreign Policy in North Africa Navigating Global Regional and Domestic Transformations

Foreign Policy in North Africa explores how the foreign policies of North African states which occupy a peripheral and subaltern position within the global system have actively responded to the constraints and opportunities stemming from multi-level transformations in the 2010s. What has been the extent of continuity and change in each country’s foreign policy-making and behaviour under such conditions? Which structural and agential factors explain the variations observed or the lack thereof? Building on scholarship on foreign policy in the Global South and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as well as the international impact of the 2011 Arab uprisings case studies on six different countries focus on a specific level of analysis for each. These range from the global (Tunisia’s financial predicaments and foreign debt negotiations) through the (sub)regional (Egypt’s relationship of necessity with Saudi Arabia Algeria’s half-hearted policies towards the conflicts in Libya and Mali) to the domestic sphere (Morocco’s power balance between the monarchy and the Islamist-led government Libya’s extreme state weakness and internal competition among proliferating actors) reaching also the deeper non-state societal level in the case of Mauritania. The volume concludes by examining post-2011 developments in the longstanding Algerian–Moroccan rivalry which hinders regional integration in the Maghreb. Foreign Policy in North Africa will be of great interest to scholars of North African politics and international relations Middle Eastern and North African studies foreign policy and global international relations. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of The Journal of North African Studies. | Foreign Policy in North Africa Navigating Global Regional and Domestic Transformations
