Material Matters Developing Business for a Circular Economy

Material Matters Developing Business for a Circular Economy

Our planet is a closed system with limited material resources yet our current economic model is designed in a one-way direction from resource extraction to disposal leading to resource depletion. This book proposes a new economic model offering an alternative to this linear ‘take-make-waste’ economy. Material Matters shows a way of creating a circular economy by using the unlimited resources we have: renewable energy data and intelligence. It describes a system based on circular business models centred on selling performance rather than ownership designing products and buildings as resource banks and equipping products with a ‘material passport’ to ensure their usability for future generations. Businesses thereby become custodians of materials rather than consumers of materials and sellers of products. The book evokes the vision of a radically new economic model based on a compelling narrative supported with cases that have been developed in conjunction with major companies for example convincing Philips to sell light instead of lamps saving energy and materials by creating a whole new business model a case which has become iconic for the circular economy. Material Matters is not a somber analysis of the state of the planet but a concrete and comprehensive agenda for change offering perspectives for taking action for business and individual consumers alike. | Material Matters Developing Business for a Circular Economy

Women and Dramatic Production 1550 - 1700

Women and Dramatic Production 1550 - 1700

There is a traditional view that women were absent from the field of dramatic production in the early modern period because of their exclusion from professional theatre. Women and Dramatic Production 1550-1700 challenges this view and breaks new ground in arguing that far from writing in closeted retreat a select number of women took an active part in directing and controlling dramatic self-representations. Examining texts from the mid-sixteenth century through to the end of the seventeenth the chapters trace the development of a women-centred aesthetic in a variety of dramatic forms. Plays by noblewomen such as Mary Sidney Elizabeth Cary Mary Wroth Rachel Fane and the women of the Cavendish family form an alternative dramatic tradition centred on the household. The powerful directorial and performative roles played by queens in royal progresses and masques are explored as examples of women's dramatic production in the royal court. The book also highlights women's performances in alternative venues such as the courtroom and the pulpit arguing that the practices of martyrs like Margaret Clitherow or visionaries like Anna Trapnel call into question traditional definitions of theatre. The challenges faced by women who were admitted to the professional theatre companies after 1660 are explored in two chapters which deal with the plays of Katherine Philips Elizabeth Polwhele Aphra Behn and Mary Pix among others. By considering the theatrical dimensions of a wide range of early modern women's writing this book reveals the breathtaking panorama of women's dramatic production and will be essential reading for students of women's writing and renaissance drama. | Women and Dramatic Production 1550 - 1700

Innovative Solutions What Designers Need to Know for Today's Emerging Markets

Innovative Solutions What Designers Need to Know for Today's Emerging Markets

Expanding into emerging markets brings with it a specific set of challenges for designing products and services. Not only do cultural differences play a role in what how and why customers behave the way they do but existing technologies distribution channels and the wants and needs of consumers become additional challenges when establishing market shares in the developing world. Innovative Solutions: What Designers Need to Know for Today's Emerging Markets describes the landscape of these new markets and discusses research and design methodologies tailored to them. Local designers and researchers offer insight directly from the depths of India China and other parts of the world. They take an in-depth look at user research methods in underserved communities new tools such as ecosystems mapping to define the elements impacting innovation and design decisions and methodologies to develop solution spaces based on the output from user research studies. The book then presents real-life examples through case studies and interviews. The case studies draw not only from the authors’ work with clients such as HP Labs Nokia Haier Philips Intel and A Piece of Pie but also from user experience and the results of innovation research across the globe. The interviews include conversations with leaders in innovation such as Roopa Purushothaman Tapan Parikh Ram Sehgal Steve Portigal Dmitry Volkov and Darelle van Greunen. A fascinating perspective of the users and ecosystem in emerging nations the book provides deeper insights on how a user-centered innovation and design approach has been applied in practical settings. Examining the challenges of innovating and designing for emerging markets it incorporates research and practice to explore new ways of uncovering the riches and opportunities in innovation and design for emerging markets. | Innovative Solutions What Designers Need to Know for Today's Emerging Markets
