An Analysis of Eugene Genovese's Roll Jordan Roll The World the Slaves Made

An Analysis of Eugene Genovese's Roll Jordan Roll The World the Slaves Made

Most studies of slavery are underpinned by ideology and idealism. Eugene Genovese's ground-breaking book takes a stand against both these influences arguing not only that all ideological history is bad history – a remarkable statement coming from a self-professed Marxist – but also that slavery itself can only be understood if master and slave are studied together rather than separately. Genovese's most important insight which makes this book a fine example of the critical thinking skill of problem-solving is that the best way to view the institution of American slavery is to understand why exactly it was structured as it was. He saw slavery as a process of continual renegotiation of power balances as masters strove to extract the maximum work from their slaves while slaves aimed to obtain acknowledgement of their humanity and the ability to shape elements of the world that they were forced to live in. Genovese's thesis is not wholly original; he adapts Gramsci's notion of hegemony to re-interpret the master-slave relationship – but it is an important example of the benefits of asking productive new questions about topics that seem superficially at least to be entirely obvious. By focusing on slave culture rather than producing another study of economic determinism this massive study succeeds in reconceptualising an institution in an exciting new way. | An Analysis of Eugene Genovese's Roll Jordan Roll The World the Slaves Made

Childhood into Adolescence Growing up in the 1970s

This book is about the lives of 11-year-old children growing up in a Midlands city in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Based on interviews with their parents it describes family life at the time as well as the experiences hopes and concerns of the children as they themselves become adolescents. The book reflects upon the changes that occur for children in the transitional period between childhood and adolescence. It looks at the friendship patterns of eleven-year-olds their special interests and activities and how they spend their leisure time as well as describing the children’s worries and concerns as perceived by their parents. It also considers family life and parental issues in the context of children’s growing independence and their developing sexual maturity. Originally written in the 1980’s but recently discovered and published now for the first time this is the fifth book in the series of long-term investigations of child up-bringing by John and Elizabeth Newson distinguished child psychologists at the University of Nottingham. Their research began in the late 1950s when the cohort of children was a year old; their mothers were subsequently interviewed at intervals as the children grew up. This fifth volume draws links between the material from interviews with parents when their sons and daughters were seven eleven sixteen and nineteen years and also invites comparison with the lives of children growing up now. The final chapter reviews the book series and the Newsons’ research programme. This exceptional book will be of interest to psychologists and other academics interested in child development as well as professionals involved in work with children and adolescents such as teachers doctors nurses and social workers. It also has great historical significance with its potential for comparisons between the lives of children and adolescents now with those growing up some 50 years ago. | Childhood into Adolescence Growing up in the 1970s

Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Focusing on notions of diaspora identity and agency this book examines ethnicity in war-torn Sri Lanka. It highlights the historical development and negotiation of a new identification of Up-country Tamil amidst Sri Lanka’s violent ethnic politics. Over the past thirty years Up-country (Indian) Tamils generally have tried to secure their vision of living within a multi-ethnic Sri Lanka not within Tamil Eelam the separatist dream that ended with the civil war in 2009. Exploring Sri Lanka within the deep history of colonial-era South Asian plantation diasporas the book argues Up-country Tamils form a diaspora next-door to their ancestral homeland. It moves beyond simplistic Sinhala-Tamil binaries and shows how Sri Lanka’s ethnic troubles actually have more in common with similar battles that diasporic Indians have faced in Fiji and Trinidad than with Hindu-Muslim communalism in neighbouring India Pakistan and Bangladesh. Shedding new light on issues of agency citizenship displacement and re-placement within the formation of diasporic communities and identities this book demonstrates the ways that culture workers including politicians trade union leaders academics and NGO workers have facilitated the development of a new identity as Up-country Tamil. It is of interest to academics working in the fields of modern South Asia diaspora violence post-conflict nations religion and ethnicity. | Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics
