Downstream Consequences of Ribb River Damming Lake Tana Basin Ethiopia

Downstream Consequences of Ribb River Damming Lake Tana Basin Ethiopia

This study assessed the downstream river system adaptation in response to upstream damming on the Ribb River Ethiopia to irrigate 15 000 ha. It combined primary and secondary data and the application of remote sensing and mathematical modeling. The pre-dam morphodynamic trends of the Ribb River were analyzed for 59 years based on aerial photographs satellite images and newly collected field data. Three dam operation scenarios were developed to analyze the long-term hydro-morphological effects of the dam on the downstream river reaches. It also assessed the applicability of physics-based analytical equations (Equilibrium Theory) compared to a 1D numerical model (SOBEK-RE) to determine the least-morphologically impactful dam operation scenario on the river reaches downstream of the dam. Moreover a HEC-RAS 2D hydrodynamic model was developed to assess the effect of the dam on the flooding extent of the Fogera Plain. This was used to study the potential implications of hydrological alteration on the ecology of the floodplain wetlands as they are the habitats of important fish and bird species. The results contribute to knowledge on the hydro-morphological and environmental impacts of dams on downstream river systems. The developed methodologies and findings may be used to study future hydro-morphological and ecological changes that may arise due to other dam operations or climate change. | Downstream Consequences of Ribb River Damming Lake Tana Basin Ethiopia

Wetland and Water Resource Modeling and Assessment A Watershed Perspective

Wetland and Water Resource Modeling and Assessment A Watershed Perspective

As a wetland of international importance located in China the Poyang Lake Basin's incredible topographical and biological diversity has provided a congregating point for scientists from around the world to engage in cross-disciplinary research. In particular the International Conference on Poyang Lake Complex Environment System was instrumental in bringing together scholars from China North America and Europe to explore the latest innovations in water resource science and watershed management. Featuring cutting-edge research in watershed management presented at this landmark event Wetland and Water Resource Modeling Assessment pairs the accounts of Poyang Lake with additional information on the important watersheds of North America and Asia to help facilitate the development of decision support tools. The book explains that successful ecosystem assessment and modeling requires three key criteria:1. Large spatial scales in data collection and analysis must be used to encompass major watershed features2. Landscape features are needed to appropriately characterize hydrological processes and ecosystem components3. Management decisions must be linked to results to facilitate ecosystem assessmentThrough the study of the diverse watersheds featured in Wetland and Water Resource Modeling Assessment such as Poyang Lake government academia and Industry can obtain the innovative technical tools needed to stay on top of this active field. | Wetland and Water Resource Modeling and Assessment A Watershed Perspective

Chilika The Fishermen the Catch and the Challenges

Chilika The Fishermen the Catch and the Challenges

From Chilika India's largest coastal lake the echoes of poetry the reflections of festive lamps its ever-present turmoil and biodiverse bounty have come together to portray livelihoods and lives half full and half empty. After a broad conceptual framework about fish fishery and fishing livelihoods this book has explicitly focused on the lake's ecosystem in Odisha and sustainability in fishing communities. The voices of the fishers have lent credence to the socio-cultural belief systems right of commons and disputes over conservation at individual and community levels. The volatility over the common user rights is underscored by lack of protection to the locals absence of guiding principles and powerful usurpers. The disruption of livelihoods through insufficient economic support is underlined by the lack of viable equitable and regulated credit structures in the region. Issues of mechanization ecological hazards adverse impact of climate change and environmental degradation are explained through their own bearing on bionomic and traditional livelihood disruptions and in-situ footprints on common property resources. In the final countdown the sustained coexistence of Chilika lake and its varied community is narrated through an integrated socio-economic lens that accommodates extant challenges into its field of vision. This book is co-published with Aakar Books New Delhi. Fingerponds: Seasonal Integrated Aquaculture in East African Freshwater Wetlands: Exploring their potential for wise use strategies PhD: UNE

Fingerponds: Seasonal Integrated Aquaculture in East African Freshwater Wetlands: Exploring their potential for wise use strategies PhD: UNE

Wetlands play an important role in the livelihoods of many rural households particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. However due to decline in rainfed terrestrial agriculture many wetlands are being encroached upon to grow crops. The question to any wetland scientist/policy maker in the region is: what efforts can be made to achieve a balance between human needs for food and income and maintenance of ecosystem integrity?. This study analyses the potential of smallholder integrated aquaculture farming systems (calledFingerponds ) around the Lake Victoria wetlands in Kenya. Various analytical tools were used to evaluate the biophysical suitability nutrient flows benefits and environmental implications of this innovative technology. The critical biophysical factors determining Fingerponds productivity are site selection and water supply. The analysis of nutrient flows in the entire agroecosystem using nitrogen as the currency indicated that the total system throughput and hence the overall productivity of the system were low. Fingerponds contributed to household livelihoods by providing protein and income and added diversity to the household activities with minimal impacts on the natural environment. With careful implementation and adaptive management Fingerponds can be incorporated into national wetland policies and enhance the balance between economic development and environmental conservation. | Fingerponds: Seasonal Integrated Aquaculture in East African Freshwater Wetlands: Exploring their potential for wise use strategies PhD: UNE

Macedonia and Identity Politics After the Prespa Agreement

Macedonia and Identity Politics After the Prespa Agreement

This book explores issues of national identity history and language in light of the 2018 Prespa Agreement. Designed to resolve a protracted and bitter dispute the agreement signed by the Macedonian and Greek foreign ministers on the banks of the Prespa lake stipulated that the Republic of Macedonia change its name to the Republic of North Macedonia. The chapters examine the social political and economic conditions and events that led to the agreement and the implications and consequences for identity politics in the region. Consideration is given to the ways in which and the reasons why identity/identities difference/differences modes of belonging and experiences of injustice and discrimination have been mobilized. By focusing on the Prespa Agreement the collection also offers valuable insight into the processes involved in (re)making boundaries (re)defining ethnic and national identities (re)inventing citizenship and (re)writing national histories. Bringing together expert contributors with intimate knowledge of and long-term engagement with the region this volume will be of interest to scholars and students of anthropology Slavic and East European studies history and international relations. African Border Disorders Addressing Transnational Extremist Organizations

African Border Disorders Addressing Transnational Extremist Organizations

Since the end of the Cold War the monopoly of legitimate organized force of many African states has been eroded by a mix of rebel groups violent extremist organizations and self-defence militias created in response to the rise in organized violence on the continent. African Border Disorders explores the complex relationships that bind states transnational rebels and extremist organizations and borders on the African continent. Combining cutting edge network science with geographical analysis the first part of the book highlights how the fluid alliances and conflicts between rebels violent extremist organizations and states shape in large measure regional patterns of violence in Africa. The second part of the book examines the spread of Islamist violence around Lake Chad through the lens of the violent Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram which has evolved from a nationally-oriented militia group to an internationally networked organization. The third part of the book explores how violent extremist organizations conceptualize state boundaries and territory and reciprocally how do the civil society and the state respond to the rise of transnational organizations. The book will be essential reading for all students and specialists of African politics and security studies particularly those specializing on fragile states sovereignty new wars and borders as well as governments and international organizations involved in conflict prevention and early intervention in the region. | African Border Disorders Addressing Transnational Extremist Organizations

Wooden Church Architecture of the Russian North Regional Schools and Traditions (14th - 19th centuries)

Wooden Church Architecture of the Russian North Regional Schools and Traditions (14th - 19th centuries)

The book presents a broad panoramic overview of church architecture in the Russian North between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries. While it is inevitably overshadowed by the imperial splendour of the country’s capital cities this unique phenomenon is regarded as the most distinctive national expression of traditional Russian artistic culture and at the same time as a significant part of humanity’s worldwide architectural heritage. The chief intention of the book is to present the regionally specific features of the wooden churches of the Russian North which vary from area to area for local natural or historical reasons. This approach touches upon the very important questions of the typology and classification of the multiplicity of architectural forms. The regional view entails giving clear definitions of the ambiguous terms architectural school and tradition explaining the origins and shaping impulses for the different regional clusters of objects. Structurally the book presents a history of the development of wooden church architecture in the Russian North and then follows the key points of the mediaeval Russian expansion along the waterways from Novgorod into the North – he Svir’ River Lake Onego the town of Kargopol’ and the River Onega the White Sea the Rivers Dvina Pinega and Mezen’ – those areas that still retain the most splendid pieces of Russian regional wooden church architecture. The study is based on field research and provides an up-to-date multi-faceted view of Russian wooden architecture. | Wooden Church Architecture of the Russian North Regional Schools and Traditions (14th - 19th centuries)

Rebuilding America's Cities

Rebuilding America's Cities

A growing cooperation between the public and private sectors indicates that the tasks of redevelopment are too large and complex for either sector to accomplish alone. Some people maintain that government can do few things right; others are equally distrustful of the private sector. As used here the private sector is considered to be all that is not government. Each of the success stories illustrated is in part a road to recovery although none appear to have been influenced by a purpose that broad. Paul R. Porter and David C. Sweet present stories of progress in self-reliance that concern neighborhood and downtown recoveries school improvement job generation a regained fiscal solvency novel financing techniques helping tenants to become homeowners and a successful venture in self-help and tenant management in crime-infested neighborhoods. The successes stem from the diverse community roles of Yale University a medical center the world's largest research organization the Clorox Company a gas company an insurance company a newspaper neighborhood and downtown organizations city governments and two religious organizations - the Mormon Church and the tiny Church of the Savior. These stories are located throughout the United States including Akron Baltimore Brooklyn Cincinnati Cleveland Columbus Fort Wayne Indianapolis Milwaukee New Haven Oakland Pittsburgh St. Louis St. Paul Salt Lake City Springfield Mass. Tampa and Washington D. C. The editors have gathered the work of professionals known in the field of urban studies: James W. Rouse Donald E. Lasater Rolf Goetze Dale F. Bertsch Joel Lieske Eugene H. Nuclear Playground

Nuclear Playground

In the late 1980s it was felt that World War III could start in the Pacific. Long regarded by the USA as an American lake the Pacific was now a focus of competition between the superpowers. The USSR whose nuclear-arms navy was limited to their north Pacific ports now had a major new naval base at Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam. In response to this new threat the Americans were planning more urgently for nuclear war in the Pacific adding to their own mighty arsenal in the region and taunting the Soviets with aggressive surveillance and military exercises. The Soviets did the same. For 40 years Pacific Islanders have had cause to resent the use of their ocean as a nuclear playground: of the five nuclear powers three – the USA USSR and China – launched missiles into the Pacific for text purposes; two – the USA and Britain – exploded nuclear devices there but had stopped; and one France continued to test nuclear bombs in one of its colonies. Pacific Islanders now have cause to fear that the ocean is becoming a nuclear battleground. Originally published in 1987 this book tells the story of the nuclear men in the Pacific and of those people they ‘displaced’ and irradiated. It is also about what these people and their governments had begun to do in response. The nuclear issue had transformed the political landscape of Micronesia and the South Pacific in the 1980s loosening the US grip and making the French increasingly unpopular. The people of these remote communities largely forgotten or considered dispensable had a nuclear past made for them. Now they want to make their own future.

In Between Subjects A Critical Genealogy of Queer Performance

In Between Subjects A Critical Genealogy of Queer Performance

This volume is a study of the connected ideas of queer and gender performance or performativity over the past several decades providing an ambitious history and crucial examination of these concepts while questioning their very bases. Addressing cultural forms from 1960s–70s sociology performance art and drag queen balls to more recent queer voguing performances by Pasifika and Māori people from New Zealand and pop culture television shows such as RuPaul’s Drag Race the book traces how and why queer and performativity seem to belong together in so many discussions around identity popular modes of gender display and performance art. Drawing on art history and performance studies but also on feminist queer and sexuality studies and postcolonial indigenous and critical race theoretical frameworks it seeks to denaturalize these assumptions by questioning the US-centrism and white-dominance of discourses around queer performance or performativity. The book’s narrative is deliberately recursive itself articulated in order performatively to demonstrate the specific valence and social context of each concept as it emerged but also the overlap and interrelation among the terms as they have come to co-constitute one another in popular culture and in performance and visual arts theory history and practice. Written from a hybrid art historical and performance studies point of view this will be essential reading for all those interested in art performance and gender as well as in queer and feminist theory. | In Between Subjects A Critical Genealogy of Queer Performance

Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians

Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians

All people in no matter what culture must be able to place their music firmly in the context of the totality of their beliefs experiences and activities for without such ties music cannot exist. This means that there must be a body of theory connected with any music system - not necessarily a theory of the structure of music sound although that may be present as well but rather a theory of what music is what it does and how it is coordinated with the total environment both natural and cultural in which human beings move. The Flathead Indians of Western Montana (just over 26 000 in number as of the 2000 census) inhabit a reservation consisting of 632 516 acres of land in the Jocko and Flathead Valleys and the Camas Prairie country which lie roughly between Evaro and Kalispell Montana. The reservation is bounded on the east by the Mission Range on the west by the Cabinet National Forest on the south by the Lolo National Forest and on the north by an arbitrary line approximately bisecting Flathead Lake about twenty-four miles south of Kalispell. The area is one of the richest agricultural regions in Montana and fish and game are abundant. The Flathead are engaged in stocking timbering and various agricultural enterprises. For the Flathead the most important single fact about music and its relationship to the total world is its origin in the supernatural sphere. All true and proper songs particularly in the past owe their origin to a variety of contacts experienced by humans with beings which though a part of this world are superhuman and the source of both individual and tribal powers and skills. Thus a sharp distinction is drawn by the Flathead between what they call make-up and all other songs. Merriam's pioneering work in the relationship of ethnography and musicology remains a primary source in this field in anthropology. | Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians
