The Central Government-Funded Teacher Education Policy in China Impacts on Career-Choice Motivation of Pre-service Teachers

The Central Government-Funded Teacher Education Policy in China Impacts on Career-Choice Motivation of Pre-service Teachers

This book utilises expectancy–value theory and undermining effect of extrinsic reward theory to examine the impact of the Central Government-Funded Teacher Education (CGFTE) policy on Chinese pre-service teachers' motivations for choosing the teaching profession. Quantitative data analysis revealed six distinct categories of motivations to teach: teacher influence job advantages (extrinsic) social value (altruistic) personal interest (intrinsic) others' suggestions and fallback career. These categories were further exemplified in ten narrative stories. The findings indicate that the CGFTE policy attracts high-school graduates with higher intrinsic motivation to enrol in teacher-training programs but it seems ineffective in increasing their intrinsic career-choice motivation. It is argued that the CGFTE policy which emphasises extrinsic benefits but limits professional development does not have a significant negative impact on pre-service teachers' motivation to choose teaching. This conclusion is supported by the offsetting effects of the policy's restrictive and encouraging aspects as explained by expectancy–value theory and the qualitative data. Nevertheless the intrinsic motivation of policy-funded pre-service teachers did not improve as much as that of their self-supported counterparts indicating potential undermining effects of the policy. The study concludes by discussing the implications of these findings for enhancing the CGFTE policy teacher training and career education in China. The book will be an essential read for students and scholars of higher education Chinese studies and educational studies in general. | The Central Government-Funded Teacher Education Policy in China Impacts on Career-Choice Motivation of Pre-service Teachers

Understanding and Countering Fascist Movements From Void to Hope

Understanding and Countering Fascist Movements From Void to Hope

This book is based on the premise that understanding fascism is crucial for defeating it. Understanding and Countering Fascist Movements suggests fascism must be understood according to two “dimensions. ” First fascism is a social movement seeking power always already connected to sources of power. Hence fascism cannot be defeated by policing it as a crime problem nor therapeutically treating it as a pathology of mental health. Second fascists have cognitive and emotional needs they are seeking to fulfill through their participation in the movement but the presence of these motivations must be held in tension with the fact that fascists are responsible for their choices and that these individual motivations also exist in a wider social context of capitalism and systems of supremacy. The book opens by examining some psychological elements of recruitment and disengagement from fascist movements before addressing broader social narratives concluding with the limitations of an approach that is grounded in the national security state that relies on individualized perpetrator-centered interventions. Rejecting centrist paradigms that see fascism as “extremism” or “accelerationism ” Braune argues that fascism must be addressed in its specificity and uniqueness as an ideology and movement. Ultimately she argues fascism can only be defeated by countervailing social movements that not only demand radical social change but offer alternative spaces of belonging community care and the search for meaning. Understanding and Countering Fascist Movements is a philosophical contribution to antifascist theory and practice that will be appreciated by academics students and activists concerned about fascism today. | Understanding and Countering Fascist Movements From Void to Hope

The Analyst’s Vulnerability Impact on Theory and Practice

The Analyst’s Vulnerability Impact on Theory and Practice

This book closely examines the analyst’s early experiences and character traits demonstrating the impact they have on theory building and technique. Arguing that choice of theory and interventions are unconsciously shaped by clinicians’ early experiences this book argues for greater self-awareness self-acceptance and open dialogue as a corrective. Linking the analyst’s early childhood experiences to ongoing vulnerabilities reflected in theory and practice this book favors an approach that focuses on feedback and confrontation as well as empathic understanding and acceptance. Essential to this task and a thesis that runs through the book are analysts’ motivations for doing treatment and the gratifications they naturally seek. Maroda asserts that an enduring blind spot arises from clinicians’ ongoing need to deny what they are personally seeking from the analytic process including the need to rescue and be rescued. She equally seeks to remove the guilt and shame associated with these motivations encouraging clinicians to embrace both their own humanity and their patients’ rather than seeking to transcend them. Providing a new perspective on how analysts work this book explores the topics of enactment mirror neurons and therapeutic action through the lens of the analyst’s early experiences and resulting personality structure. Maroda confronts the analyst’s tendencies to favor harmony over conflict passivity over active interventions and viewing the patient as an infant rather than an adult. Exploring heretofore unexamined issues of the psychology of the analyst or therapist offers the opportunity to generate new theoretical and technical perspectives. As such this book will be invaluable to experienced psychodynamic therapists and students and trainees alike as well as teachers of theory and practice. | The Analyst’s Vulnerability Impact on Theory and Practice
