Rheinberger: Ave Maria [Musica Sacra X]

Today Rheinberger is known primarily as a composer of motets for several voices and for masses for mixed choir. On the other hand, the fact that he also composed a whole series of solo works or choral works for women's voices is today much less well known, although he wrote such works throughout his entire creative life and a good number of these are among his most popular and commercially successful compositions. Volume 10 of the Rheinberger CD series is dedicated to this interesting, long neglected genre in Rheinberger's sacred oeuvre.

Missa ad maiorem Dei gloriam

Wolfram Buchenberg’s Missa ad maiorem Dei gloriam in Latin for big band, chorus, and baritone is a good half hour in duration. In the Kyrie the composer takes as his theme people’s deep-seated fear and its overcoming through faith: the Gloria and Sanctus/Benedictus express overwhelming joy, and the “Dona nobis” in the Agnus Dei dies away in a mood of weightless floating. This absolutely thrilling setting of the mass, influenced by Latin jazz, suitable for concert or equally for liturgical performance, requires a large, well-rehearsed chorus and big band.

More than the music of all other eras, at Christmas the music of the Baroque enjoys continued popularity. La vie antérieure

The harmonic turns and piano configurations in La vie antérieure – the “former life” – seem almost exuberantly lyrical. At the beginning, the archaic sounds and words of the male choir conjure up a dream world that is soon flooded with the power of the waves and the rich polyphonic harmony of the choir and the piano. With the outcry “C’est là que j’ai vécu!” [I have lived there] which expresses the fervent yearning to return to a past life, the collective desperately reinforces the longing for the past. Once more, the women’s choir conjures up this lost paradise in an undulating soft sound before the desolate sadness is pierced by the power of the music of the piano postlude,creating a moment that is completely in the present.

Under the title “Darkness or Light” Cornelius Hauptmann and Eric Schneider present selected lieder by Franz Schubert which move between the poles of transitoriness and becoming in life. The music, closely reflecting the many and diverse texts, borrows influences from classical music and jazz, chanson, pop and chamber music, and is merged into a unique and unmistakable musical language by Peter Schindler.

Dein edles Herz, der Liebe Thron - Kantaten

Little is known about Dieterich Buxtehude’s life [ca. 1637 1707] and about the circumstances of his work in St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck, but on the other hand, more is known about his influence on the musical life of his times. Thus, in 1703 George Frideric Handel and Johann Mattheson, and in the winter of 1705/1706, Johann Sebastian Bach spent time with Buxtehude in Lübeck in order to round offer their training with him in the art of composing and organ playing. Mattheson described him as a “highly-regarded organist” and Handel was even interested in succeeding Buxtehude in Lübeck. The musicians of Capella Angelica and the Lautten Compagney have approached his vocal work with theelan and joy of discovery. Their search has proved enlightening, yielding chorale melodies, as well as works in the then modern styles of concerto, aria and mixed form.

Louis Spohr: Die letzten Dinge : Oratorium

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the death of Louis Spohr, for the first time Carus is publishing a critical edition of The Last Judgment, the most important of his four oratorios. It was first performed on Good Friday, 1826 in Kassel. It is based on the theologically most significant portions of the Revelations of John in the New Testament, whose visions of death and eternity Spohr vividly portrayed in music. The work represents an important enrichment to the repertoire of the oratorio, especially suitable for the end of the church year. It is captivating on account of its masterful instrumentation, excellent use of chromaticism, large-scale solo recitatives andaccessible choral passages filled with heartfelt sensitivity on the one hand, and exciting drama on the other.

Wolf/Gottwald: Vier Lieder

The sophisticated choral arrangements by Clytus Gottwald have found a place in concert life throughout the world. He has made four Lieder by Hugo Wolf available for the choral repertoire: His transcriptions for 7 16 voices under the title “Vier Lieder” include the opening Lied from the Italienisches Liederbuch [“Und willst du deinen Liebsten sehen“] as well as three settings of Mörike poems [“Das verlassene Mägdelein,“ “Auf ein altes Bild“ and “Der Gärtner”].

Johann Philipp Förtsch: Ich freue mich im Herrn

The musical output of Johann Philipp Förtsch [1652 1732] is closely tied to the development of the Hamburg opera. He was among its founders and at times he made essential contributions to the musical life of the Hansa city. In addition to his activities as a composer, singer and librettist, he is recorded in history as a doctor and a diplomat. Among his surviving compositions are several works for the stage and instrumental music, but above all, 80 sacred cantatas, of which several are presented here as world premiere recordings.
