The Not-Doings of an Insomniac : (in the Form of a Partita in Seven Movements for Double Bass)

The Not-Doings of an Insomniac : (in the Form of a Partita in Seven Movements for Double Bass)

The Not-Doings of an Insomniac Partita for Solo Double Bass with spoken texts was premiered by Robert Black at the International Society of Bassist Convention at the Griffin Concert Hall in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Not-Doings of an Insomniac developed as a result of Philip Glass’s frequent travels to unfamiliar cities and different time-zones, changes that often brought on bouts of insomnia. While on a trip in Europe in 2015, Glass decided to turn these redundant waking hours into something useful, and one of the results is this Partita for Solo Double Bass, written for Robert Black of Bang on a Can All-Stars fame. The piece is written in seven movements, each with its own title: Not Dreaming; Tasting; Smelling; Hearing; Seeing; Touching, and finishing with Not Beginning, Not Ending. What raises this set into something atmospheric and theatrical are the poems in between each movement. These are by Glass’s friends or associates, and the texts by Lou Reed, John Cale, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, David Byrne, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith and Arthur Russell are read on the recording of this work by Robert Black. The Complete Piano Etudes is the first ever publication of all 20 of renowned composer Philip Glass 's beautifully simple pieces for solo Piano. With their deft rhythmic and dynamic changes, exciting harmonies and moving melodies, the Etudes are a joy to hear and play. Whether you are planning to perform the pieces in public or privately for your own pleasure, this sheet music is guaranteed to be produced to the highest quality and the utmost accuracy. The critically-acclaimed and widely influential composer himself states: "The Etudes are meant to be appreciated not only by the general listener, but especially by those who have the ability and patience to learn, play and perform the music themselves." The Etudes explore a diverse range of textures, techniques and harmony, making this sheet music perfect for a Pianist looking to immerse themselves in more lyrical ways of playing, or simply to enjoy the subtle beauty of the pieces. To add to the brilliance of the music itself, the engraving has been printed on traditional and aesthetically pleasing cream paper and is conveniently sewn-bound to lay flat. Composed over two decades between 1991 to 2012, the Etudes were originally released as two books along with a recording of the first ten by Glass himself in 2003. Now, this collection exclusively contains all of these fantastic Piano pieces, first conceived as a self-teaching tool to enhance and aid Glass 's own understanding of the instrument. As one of the most prolific and influential composers of the 20th century, Philip Glass 's works have been enjoyed for almost half a century throughout the world. With this book you can learn all 20 of his interesting and arresting Etudes for solo Piano, published together in a single volume for the first time.
