Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree

The 18th-century poem, Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree, found its way into an American hymnal compiled by Joshua Smith in 1784. Most often classified as a carol. A soprano soloist introduces the simple melody which is then harmonized in verse 2 and passed down to the tenor line in verse 3. Verse 4 finds the melody transposed up a third, then embellished by a soprano descant on the final verse. Feathers in the Wind: A Yiddish Folktale

A spirited musical retelling of a timeless Jewish folktale about the consequences of gossip. Attributed to a Hasidic scholar commonly referred to as the Baal Shem Tov, (ca. 1700–1760), the parable tells of a man who circulates a false rumor about the town rabbi, causing the villagers to lose faith in their trusted leader. When the man goes to beg the rabbi’s forgiveness for damaging his reputation, the rabbi tells the man that he may return and ask for forgiveness only after he has released the feathers from a pillow and gathered them all up again. The impossible task serves as a powerful metaphor for the far-reaching effects of gossip and the inability to reverse its harm. This colorful setting pairs the fable sung in Yiddish with a spoken narration of the story in English to be delivered by individual choristers. The final chorale setting of a medieval Hebrew meditation on Psalm 34 delivers the moral of the story. The music draws upon evocative motifs from the Jewish musical tradition with a contemporary sensibility. The Morning Train: 4. Worrisome Blues

This fourth and closing song of the set "The Morning Train" is perhaps the best known and most rousing of the set. The original title is "Worried Man Blues." But in this new arrangement, the women join in with the theme and sentiment. So, the title has been changed to "Worrisome Blues." Duration: 5:15.

Fred J. Cooper Organ Book : Five Compositions for Organ Solo

Commissioned by the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the Fred J. Cooper Organ Book celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Five Philadelphia area composers were selected to each contribute an accessible brief solo organ work. Each composer was given a general guideline for the style of piece they were to write. The results are nicely varied, with opportunities for colorful registrations. Maid of Constant Sorrow

A familiar American folk song is A Man of Constant Sorrow. Adaptations exist for a maid of constant sorrow as well. This is a very simple melody, placed in the key of C major. The message is a mournful one. The soul is troubled, and not at rest. “All through this world, I’m bound to ramble...perhaps I’ll take the very next train.” Then, later, “perhaps I’ll die upon this train.” Some comfort is taken with the lines “I know we’ll meet on God’s Golden Shore.” Approachable vocal writing with a gently flowing piano accompaniment. She Walks in Beauty : From Love Shall Live Forever

Part of the collection Love Shall Live Forever. "She Walks in Beauty" begins with a piano introduction allowing time to enter the poetic world of Lord Byron. A simple melody is accompanied by steady, walking rhythms. Although the original poem speaks only of the woman (beloved)- reverently, objectively- this new interpretation inserts a verse to include the man (lover), thus creating a love song for a couple. He walks in courage...they walk in beauty, O love! The piece concludes with a quote from the Song of Solomon (Set Me As A Seal). Duration: 3:00
