The piece was written originally for equal voice choir in 1929. A mixed-choir adaptation was made in 1961 at the request of Oxford University Press. This appeared in print in the same year with an English text under the title A Christmas Carol in a collection of Christmas songs, as well as in a separate print. The musical material of the mixed-choir version largely follows the original. There is one essential difference in verse 5, beginning at bar 35 (Babe all holy) where the tenor solo appears with a delightful eight-bar countermelody not found in the original. Since this version only appeared in Kodály's lifetime with an English text, this has been retained, but we havealso provided the original Hungarian text upon which the equal voice version is based. Zoltán Kodály's complete choral works for mixed voices were published in a new, extended, edition in 2018 (Z. 6725 and Z. 6725A). This volume containing 51 compositions has been edited by the renowned conductor Péter Erdei, one of the most devoted interpreters of Kodály's choral works. The new edition takes into consideration the manuscript sources for the compositions housed in the Kodály Archives in Budapest. The publication features new, easily-legible music scores edited on uniform principles. For better readability, the new edition is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions.The present publication is an offprint from the renewed edition of Kodály's complete choral works for mixed voices. It has the same format as the volume, and has been printed on excellent-quality pale-yellow paper.

Angelo Maria Fiore (c. 1660-1723), composer and virtuoso cellist, was the founder of the Piedmont school. In 1697 he was invited to the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna as a rare cello player. During his lifetime his work entitled Trattenimenti di camera a due stromenti, violino e cimbalo o violino e violoncello was published by Bartolomeo Gregori in 1698, barely three years after the first cello sonatas to appear in print, the works of Giuseppe Jacchini. Three of the 14 Trattenimenti were written for cello and basso continuo, they form the contents of this volume. This edition is faithful to the text of the source, the archaic style of writing has been modernized, to make thescore, intended for practical (mainly pedagogical) purposes, easier to read.

This volume marks the 40th volume of Liszt's published piano works for two hands. The free arrangements and fantasies created in the second half of the 1830s accurately represent the composing skills of the already mature, celebrated piano virtuoso that Liszt was by that time. The themes of Trois morceaux de salon (the first work of this volume) are derived from Swiss and Spanish melodies in the first two movements, respectively. The third movement, on the other hand, quotes Giovanni Pacini's opera Niobe. Following this ''trilogy'' melodies from Bellini, Donizetti, Meyerbeer, and Mercadante's major operas appear. Examples include reminiscences and fantasies based on Ipuritani, Lucia di Lammermoor, Les Huguenots, and Il giuramento. To the best of our knowledge, the latter has not appeared in print anywhere so far.

Ern Dohnányi (1877 - 1960) composed his C minor fantasia in 1892, at the age of fifteen.This work, which is appearing in print now for the first time, is a real curiosity: apart from a few polyphonic stylistic exercises written while he was at the music academy, this is Dohnányi's only piece for organ. The composer later recalled his first acquaintance with that instrument thus: 'My experience with the organ actually dates back to when I was a third-year grammar school student, for beginning with that year I served as organist for the Sunday worship services in the grammar school's church. …These were the first wages I ever earned through music.' The Fantasie wasprepared for publication on the basis of the composer's manuscript by the well-known Dohmányi researcher Deborah Kiszely.

Valse impromptu - Petite Valse Favorite

The earliest surviving version of the popular Valse-Impromptu was written by Liszt into the diary of Tsaritsa Aleksandra Feodorovna on his visit to St Petersburg in 1842. This version appeared in print the following year as Petit valse favorite. On his next visit to Russia, in 1843, Liszt wrote a musically and technically more demanding version for Countess Marie Kalergis, a pupil of Chopin, but this was never published in the composer's lifetime. A final version, similar in shaping to the second, appeared in 1853 with the title Valse-Impromptu. The present edition contains the score of all three versions as published in the New Liszt Edition, with the critical notes to them andprefaces in English and German covering all the main issues of the work's origin and interpretation.

Zoltán Kodály’s unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author’s edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Els áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a „commemorative extended edition” of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with the manuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 we emended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály’s collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek Úristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord’s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), Újesztend t köszönt (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known under the title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions; the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szed ’s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály’s mixed choruses to date; it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue.

Not many people know that Ferenc Liszt arranged some of his piano pieces for the cello, with piano accompaniment, and this version of the works appeared in print during the maestro's lifetime. Árpád Pejtsik selected two of these for this volume compiled to mark Liszt's jubilee: Elegies I and II. The other compositions by Liszt that appear in the collection were likewise originally works for piano: the Ave Maria and Cantique d'amour (pieces from the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses cycle) were transcribed by a pupil of Liszt, Robert Pflughaupt: the cello version, transposed into G major, of the E major Consolation is by Jules de Swert, solo cellist in the Weimar orchestraof those days: that of the Angelus (the opening piece in Volume 3 of the cycle entitled Years of Pilgrimage) is by Lothar Windsperger, a German composer who lived at the turn of the 19th-20th century.

The plan for the three orchestral Nocturnes took a long time to mature: Debussy first alluded to them as 'Three evening scenes' in a letter dated September 1892. Two years later the work was already referred to as a concerto, which would have been written for the renowned violinist, Ysaye. In the end, however, it was the original idea which meterialised. According to notes on the composer's manusript the detailed elaboration of the Nocturnes took two years: 'Composé de décembre 1897 á décembre 1899'. Only the first two movements were played at the first performance in Paris on 9th December 1900. The complete work was performed on 27th October 1901. Although the full scoreappeared in print as early as 1900, Debussy made a number of substantial changes in the orchestration during the years that followed, only the much later, in 1930 published version may be regarded as the final one which forms the basis of the present edition.

[Let's Play the Recorder] is for both teachers and learners of the instrument, for young people who encounter the instrument during their advanced studies, as well as anyone interested in learning the recorder as an adult, or who wants to refresh their former skill on the instrument. The volume provides supplementary material for volumes I and II of János Béres's Recorder Method (Z. 5406, Z. 7062): it contains recordings of the thirty-seven exercises, folk songs, and performance pieces found in the Method. In addition there is the music of many other exercises, groups of folk songs, and pieces, with their recordings. All the material is accompanied by a brief description which gives useful tips on how to overcome technical and musical challenges. This volume does not contain the musical scores of the exercises, songs, and pieces in volumes I and II of the Recorder Method, so the benefits of Furulyázzunk együtt! can only be fully enjoyed in conjunction with the Recorder Method.This volume is distributed in both print and digital formats. The audio recordings can only be found in the digital edition, but the printed edition contains a unique code giving free access to the digital edition.

This large-scale work originally written for male voices has been adapted for mixed voices by Kodály himself. The work was written initially for the centennial of the Calvinist Teacher Training Institute in Nagyk rös. Nothing has been discovered as to when he actually did the arrangement. The year 1952 was suggested by eyewitnesses who have said the version was first performed by the Budapest Pozsonyi Street Calvinist Church choir in 1953. (The date 1952 appears at the end of a fair copy in an unknown hand.) On the CD we hear 11 works performed by Kocsis, from a recording made in 1982 which has not previously been commercially issued. This edition has been published for György Kurtág's 90th birthday.
