John Jacob Niles: Go 'Way From My Window (Low Voice)

John Jacob Niles (1892-1980) was an American singer, composer, and collector of folk songs. Go ‘Way From My Window was one of his first compositions, written in 1908 when he was just 16 years old, and working on his father’s farm. Inspired by a Negro worker, it was supposedly dedicated to a blond-haired, blue-eyed girl who snubbed his efforts. In 1930, Niles , by then a well-established musician, rearranged the song and gave its first successful public performance. Since then it has been sung again and again the world over. Here it has been arranged for a Low Voice (Alto or Bass) and Piano.

Composer's NoteFantasia On An Ostinato is based on a famous repetitive passage by Ludwig van Beethoven (Symphony No.7, second movement). That music is unique in Beethoven's output because of a relentless ostinato that continues, unvaried except for a long crescendo and added accompanimental voices, for over four minutes. Beethoven's near-minimalistic use of his material and my own desire to write a piece in which the performer is responsible for decisions concerning the durations of repeated patterns led to my first experiment in so-called minimalist techniques.
