Due North

Composed for a band festival in Duluth, Minnesota, and suggesting perhaps an exciting downhill ski run or possibly a snowmobile chase through the woods, Due North is a fast-paced overture written entirely in a single tempo. Along the way,various moods are suggested as themes and musical ideas are passed from section to section. The percussion section provides a driving, rhythmic pulse throughout.

The cinematic approach to the music of Arctic Fire portrays many different images of the north – the crimson sunlight glinting off the icebergs, the radiance of the Northern Lights, the blaze of the Red Twig Dogwood, the scarletred sunsets, and the fiery spirit of the people who live there. The piece opens and closes with a series of dramatic musical snapshots. In between, the music evolves and transforms through a wide range of stylistic textures and moods. A brilliantlyscored and effective setting for winds.

This amazing feat of endurance was theinspiration for Iditarod. In cinematic fashion, the point of view cuts from long-shots to close-ups (from the dog's view to the eagle's), constantly moving forward with a relentless pulse. With a brief respite, a majestic,sweeping theme is introduced and develops. And then - back to the race! With renewed energy, the dogs race the final stretch; the music building and intensifying to the very end. Iditarod was commissioned by the WestVancouver Youth Band to commemorate the band's 80th anniversary. Take your audience on this exhilarating ride! Dur: 5:35
