Now Is The Month Of Maying is one of the most famous of the English balletts – a light part song, similar to a madrigal, frequently with a fa-la-la chorus, common among Elizabethan and Italian Renaissance composers. The fun piece was written by the most famous composer of secular music in Elizabethan England, one of the foremost members of the English Madrigal School, Thomas Morley , and published in 1595. The song delights in bawdy double-entendre – it is apparently about spring dancing, but this is a metaphor for sex. Its imagery and puns are characteristic of the Renaissance. In 1916 he published Six Choral Folk Songs, of which Hampshire folk tune The Song of the Blacksmith is the fourth.Holst uses the power of his mixed Voice Chorale to set the song among onomatopaeic syllables to evoke the smithy. The song is one verse long which Holst repeats not quite completely three times, like the endlessly spinning thoughts of a rejected lover. A Roman War Song is a chorus from the opera Rienzi by Richard Wagner . It has been arranged here for TTBB Male Voice Chorus with Piano accompaniment by Percy E. Fletcher , with the lyrics translated into English by George Ellerton . Rienzi was one of the composer’s earlier operas, but remains one of his most popular. Structured in five acts, it was written from 1838-1840 and first performed in 1842. The plot revolves around the life of revolutionary Cola di Rienzi , who helps to overthrow the established nobility in Rome, before the populace also turns against him. Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was a German composer best known for his operas, most famously his Ring cycle. His complex textures and shifting tonality is sometimes seen as marking the birth of modern music.

Corpus Christi is an anonymous Middle English Carol, first written down c.1500. It was re-worked as a carol for Soprano and Tenor Soloists with SATB chorus by Peter Walock (1894-1930) in 1919. It was dedicated to Thomas Strong , later Bishop of Oxford, who had been Dean of Christ Church College during Warlock's brief time studying there, and who is better known for encouraging William Walton's musical career.  While he is best remembered for his scandalous lifestyle and his large-scale Capriol Suite , the Corpus Christi carol ranks alongside Bethlehem Down as one of Warlock's most sensitive and beautiful creations.

It has been arranged for Double Choir with Alto Soloist by Granville Bantock. Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946) was a British composer, conductor and educator. He channelled his energetic and creative personality into many musical projects, championing the works of Jean Sibelius, founding the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and composing many splendid classical pieces. Viewed by his contemporaries as out-of-date, his music is now being appreciated as one of the last great contributions from the English Romantic movement.

Morris Dance is a piece for Piano duet. First published in 1944, it was one of the many popular duets that the composer wrote, partly for his own use and performance, and partly for public benefit and enjoyment. Alec Rowley (1892-1958) was an English composer, organist and teacher. As well as his frequent Piano recitals and broadcasts, he gained renown through his large-scale works performed at the Promenade Concerts, but most of his compositions are miniatures and small-scale works appropriate for amateur forces. Chopin wrote many Mazurkas. The Mazurka In D is one of the lesser-known examples. The Contredanse is written in the little-used key of G Flat Major. There remains controversy as to whether it was actually written by Chopin or not. If it was, it was probably written c.1827, but it was never published during his lifetime. Frédéric Chopin (1710-1849) was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist, whose compositional career was spent mostly in Paris. He only wrote music for the Piano, and is best known today for his 12 Etudes and 24 Preludes, a key part of any pianist’s repertoire.

Oh! Fie, Shepherd, Fie is a traditional comic song, which tells the bawdy story of a young girl who meets a shepherd in a meadow one day, and tries in vain to resist his advances. The most popular melody was recorded by William Defesch (Willem de Fesch; 1687-1761), a Dutch composer and conductor who spent most of his career in London. It has been arranged here for Voice and Piano by Elisabeth Poston (1905-1987), a British composer and musician who studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later worked for both the BBC and the Arts Council. She is best remembered for her setting of the Christmas carol Jesus Christ the Apple Tree.

Folk Songs Of Many Lands Two Part

Folk Songs Of Many Lands is a collection of over 70 different traditional lays, melodies, dance and tunes from across Europe and beyond. They were gathered and published in 1911 by John Spencer Curwen (1847-1916), who took over his father’s publishing company and encouraged musical competitions among amateur musicians. The songs have all been arranged for two Voices and Piano. Percy Eastman Fletcher (1879-1932) was a British composer and musical director, whose varied output encompassed theatre, cantatas, orchestral music, brass band competition pieces, settings of folk songs, and much more. Unfortunately many of his works are now largely forgotten, but they are probably one of the most under-appreciated gems of English light music.
