After the Rain for String Orchestra, draws on Max Ernst's disturbing painting Europe After the Rain which depicts the bleak remains of a landscape left after some inexplicable catastrophe.The work was commissioned by the City of London Sinfonia and first performed in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London 1992.

Jack Hawes: Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis In D (SATB)

Jack Hawes (1916-2004) was a British composer, cellist, and pianist. He wrote widely for choir, orchestra, strings, and solo instruments, and cited his influences as Walton, Ireland, Bliss, Delius, and Debussy. His first setting of the evening canticles, the Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis in D , was completed in 1955 and dedicated to the church of St Mary-Le-Tower, Ipswich, where he sang as a boy chorister and first began to study the organ. It is scored for SATB with Organ accompaniment, and is firmly in the 20th century Anglican style, with plenty of soaring melodic lines and big climatic moments.

Carl Maria Von Weber: The Huntsmen's Chorus (Der Freischutz)

This short chorus is taken from the Romantic Opera Der Freischutz (The Marksman). The story concerns a young brave huntsman called Max, and the full [production features the well-known Huntsmen's Chorus sung by his band of men throughout Bohemian woods.Both the composition and the story are prototypical examples Romantic Opera-writing. In this single-sheet version the chorus has been arranged for the upper or female voices by McNaught, and is presented in both vocal score and Tonic Sol-Fa.

Benjamin Frankel: Concerto For Violin And Orchestra Op.24 (Violin/Piano)

Benjamin Frankel's reputation is based on the cycle of five string quartets and eight symphonies which, together with the powerfully beautiful concertos for violin, and for viola, rather overshadow many of his other fine pieces. The Violin Concerto grew from the composer's long and close association with Max Rostal, a friendship which also inspired one of Frankel's perhaps best known compositions, the First Sonata for Solo Violin.Frankel's exciting Concerto For Violin And Orchestra Op.24 has been beautifully arranged for Violin with Piano Reduction, by Philip G. Jones. The solo violin part is also included on a separate insert.

John Joubert: Psalm 100

For double SATB and Piano/Organ.This energetic and rhythmic setting of the Jubilate was commissioned for the 2010 Gloucester Three Choirs Festival. While the musical language is tonal, the harmony is often coloured by 4ths, recalling the harmonic language of the same composer?s well-known Torches and O Lord, the Maker of al thing. The setting is perfectly suited to big choral events, but is not the kind of piece that most choirs will be able to manage on their own, since it includes divisions within the two four-part choirs and there is a demanding treble solo in the middle of the piece. The accompaniment requires a highly accomplished player and is better suited to the piano than to the organ. Handel: The King Shall Rejoice

For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11, 1727, Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was, according to all reports, one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received, and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem No. 2 ('The King Shall Rejoice'), although less well-known than Anthem No. 1, is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. This work contains an opening Allegro, brilliant and elegant rather than pompous; a grandiose setting of 'Glory and great worship hast thou laid upon him'; and a lively fugal Alleluia as a conclusion.Arranged for four-part chorus of mixed voices with organ or piano accompaniment. Benjamin Frankel: Trio Op.10 (Score and Parts)

Trio (Op. 10) was composed c.1940 and first published in 1943. It is scored for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano. One of Frankel’s earliest works, it is light and pleasing, showing how the composer was first influenced by jazz and classical chamber music before he later turned to larger symphonic works and started experimenting with serialism. Benjamin Frankel (1906-1973) was a British composer and musician. He is best remembered for writing over one hundred film and television scores, including The Man In The White Suit and The Battle Of The Bulge , but he also wrote eight symphonies and many smaller works such as his Violin Sonata and Concerto , which were written for Max Rostal.

Thea Musgrave: Largo, In Homage to B.A.C.H. For String Orchestra (5.4.3.2.1 players)

Largo, In Homage to B.A.C.H. was commissioned by the Carmel Bach Festival 2013, and Music Director Paul Goodwin to whom the work is dedicated. COMPOSER NOTE: My very first idea was to use the BACH initials as a basis for the work - not as the melodic motif often used by composers, but rather as a harmonic structure. This is possible because in the German musical tradition, B stands for B flat and H for B natural. This led to the thought that there would be four short sections, each led by a different soloist, forming an emotional journey: Lamentoso (mournful), Ardente (fervent), Inquieto (restless) and Sereno (peaceful). The Double Bass leads the first section, B. Lamentoso (B flat major). The Cello leads the next, A. Ardente (A major), faster and higher in pitch to reflect the change of mood, and when the Viola soloist urgently interrupts in C. Inquieto (C major), the scene is set for a big climax. In the final section, H. Sereno (B minor), the mood, persuaded by the Violin soloist, quietens and eventually leads to a brief quote from the famous chorale from the St. Matthew Passion, O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden which ends the work, in calm and peace, with a 'tierce de Picardie'. In turn, each soloist carries the linear activity as protagonist on this emotional journey, and the accompaniment to each section is dominated by the ?tonality? indicated. But there is also a mysterious ?misty? overlay, only dissipating after the Viola?s tempestuous climax. The cluster of notes that makes up this ?mist? is formed from the octatonic scale, in each case incorporating notes of the triad of the relative section to determine its tonality (B flat major, C major etc). Each section therefore uses only the notes of the octatonic scale1 associated with it - until the Viola begins to incorporate a chromatic scale2 - and it is only in the final section that the familiar diatonic scale 3 appears and the mist is dissipated. Therefore, although the overall feeling of the four sections alters to travel spontaneously and 'organically' through the arc of the piece, each section (B.A.C.H.) is rigorously organised and controlled with similar internal ingredients as well as within a "master plan." This, for me, is the essence of Bach.

Craig McLeish: A Gaelic Blessing (Novello New Choral Series)

A Gaelic Blessing is a simple and catchy piece by Craig McLeish. This piece will be particularly useful for school, junior and community choirs, and a tuneful introduction to singing simple contrapuntal lines.The second soprano part repeats the tune at bar 33 and should dominate here; the first sopranos and altos should support appropriately. Ease and beauty of tone should be of paramount importance throughout.An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers, the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs, including sacred and secular works from simple, four-part settings to more expansive, yet accessible, repertoire in an exciting variety of styles.Craig McLeish began his musical life as a chorister at St Paul?s Cathedral under Barry Rose. He began composing at the age of ten and his preces and responses for four trebles are still in the repertoire. After a degree at York University he returned to London to study at the Guildhall and sang again at St Paul?s as a tenor. At the time he also arranged and copied music for West End shows such as Les Miserables and Miss Saigon, and played bass guitar for various groups. This led to a spell in the cult pop band ?Fat & Frantic?, who shaved the top 100 twice with the whimsical anthem Last night my wife hoovered my head. He also worked as musical assistant for David Heneker (Half a Sixpence) and David Fanshawe (African Sanctus).In 1992 Craig became director of the Methodist Association of Youth Clubs Orchestra and Singers, performing concerts throughout the UK and becoming involved in a number of recordings and BBC broadcasts. During this time he arranged more than 250 orchestral scores ranging from Queen to Calamity Jane, Stravinsky and Stevie Wonder. Alongside this he began arranging and writing songs for children?s collections (Big Blue Planet, Love Shone Down) and producing recordings and string arrangements for various artists (Sheila Walsh, Kim Hill, Matt Redman). He is also well known as a conductor and arranger for Songs of Praise.Recently Craig has collaborated with composer Tolga Kashif writing orchestrations for the RPO?s Seo Taiji Symphony, the Classic FM chart-topping CD by saxophonist Tyler Rix, and the Genesis Suite which was premiered at the Barbican. He has been musical director of Young Voices UK for 13 years, bringing large school choirs together to play with a live band and solo artists, and currently conducts the Milton Keynes Community Choir, Hart and Soul Community Choir and the Milton Keynes Youth Choir.
