Lieder Line by Line and Word for Word

The book prints the words of German poems set to music by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, and Richard Strauss. In between each line of German text are printed word-for-word literal Englishtranslations, and a clear prose translation is also provided for each poem.

Night Piece

Richard Causton's Night Piece for solo piano is a short encore work based on the clarinet line from the slow movement of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. It was premiered by the Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski in November 2014.

Viola Concerto : Reduction for viola and piano

This edition of the piano reduction is compatible with the Walton Edition full score and restores the solo line as edited and prepared by Frederick Riddle. It contains tempo markings and dynamic and expression marks from both of Walton's orchestrations (1929 and 1962), the 1962 version distinguished by lighter type.

This unaccompanied duet for soprano and mezzo conflates R. S. Thomas' beautiful poem on the sacred quality of moorland with passages from three different Psalms and a line from the hymn 'Rheidol'. This is both a fine concertpiece and an imaginative, compelling anthem-substitute whose technical demands are well within reach of most female soloists.

Cantate Domino

An unusual and dramatic anthem for SATB choir (with divisions) unaccompanied The English verses, starting 'O sing unto the Lord a new song', are framed by the Latin first line 'Cantate Domino canticum novum'. The words and plainsong melody of the Veni Creator Spiritus make an unexpected and effective entry towards the end of the anthem. It is also included in Rutter's Psalmfest.

Noche Serena

Erkoreka sets a sixteenth-century poem which contemplates the eternal and boundless beauty of the heavens, and mankind's earthy estrangement from this realm. At times solo cello lines rise out of the texture as if in a dialoguewith the vocal line and at others they are divided into two choirs. Serene sections contrast with surging dymanics, frenetic rhythms, fierce accents and snap pizzicatos.

O Virgo Virginum

O Virgo Virginum by Gabriel Jackson for solo Tenor and SSATB unaccompanied.Following on from the publication of Jackson's settings of the seven 'O' antiphons under the title Seven Advent Antiphons, O Virgo virginum is a setting of the Latin text recognised as the eighth 'O' antiphon and performed as such in many Christian traditions. Jackson's imaginative setting features a melismatic line for tenor soloist and aleatoric writing.

Beuk O'Newcassel Sangs

A Beuk o'Newcassel Sangs is the title of a nineteenth-century folk-song collection. Finnissy uses the folk-song texts, with numerous alterations, as a starting point for this own melodic material. The seven songs evoke a folkquality through the use of heavily decorated modal tunes. Only one line of melody is heard at a time, and the clarinet and piano sustain drones around the vocal part or provide linking material.

In Sunlight

The composer writes: The structure is a short set of double variations, the two themes following a short introduction. One is flamboyant and rhetorical, the other gentle and lyrical. The first develops rhythmically, through atoccata to a vigorous dance, the second becomes increasingly decorated so that the line is almost dissolved, but finally emerges in its clearest, simplest form. In a coda each musical character disappears into silence.
