Tom Feldman: Masters Of Bottleneck Blues Guitar

Tom Feldman: Masters Of Bottleneck Blues Guitar

The blues recorded from the late 1920's through late 1930's is certainly some of the most vibrant sounds in American music history. It seems that anyone and everyone could and would be recorded which created a catalogue of stylistic diversity unmatched to date. The technique of using a slide, whether a metal tube, glass bottleneck or a knife was used by many of these early bluesmen. This lesson offers a look into the players from that era that used this technique. Many had only one or two patterns by which they played but we have the great fortune of gleaning from them all, creating a well rounded grasp of the genre. Tom Feldmann is a master of this style and in these two DVDs, of over four hours, he breaks down the complexities of this way of playing.Songs range from beginner to advanced. Most songs have a mixture of chords and fingered notes in addition to the slide, making this a great lesson for those looking to expand their knowledge of the bottleneck/slide technique as well as the Open D and Open G tunings.A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on each DVD. In addition the original recordings of all the tunes are included. Titles Include: OPEN G TUNING: BOBBY GRANT Nappy Headed Blues LEAD BELLY C.C. Spiced Up Fingerstyle Arrangements : Taught by Cory Seznec

This lesson features a mixed bag of six songs arranged in a variety of ways with the idea of adding some spicy seasoning to the fingerpicker’s cookbook. The lesson employs tricks and licks that Cory has picked up over the years in his quest to find his own “style”. In this almost four hour lesson each song has it’s own built-in exercises for fingerpicker’s looking to head in new directions. The old standard A Sin To Tell A Lie becomes a highly arpeggiated waltz with some fun licks up the neck. Somebody Stole My Gal incorporates counterpoint, chord inversions, and nice bass movement. The old jug band tune Sadie Green (The Vamp of New Orleans) gets revamped with a feel that bounces from down low New Orleans rumba to punchy ragtime picking and back again. A highly unorthodox treatment of Blind Willie McTell’s East St Louis Blues gets deep into Cooder-esque syncopation, and a chorus was added to make it a little less repetitive. The instrumental “showpiece” No Hiding Place was influenced by Cool John Ferguson’s virtuosic zinger off of a Music Maker Relief Foundation music compilation (likely Ferguson’s take on the old gospel number No Hiding Place Down Here), and then taken on a bunch of detours. Those looking to “Africanize” their playing will enjoy Cory’s take on The Parting Glass which takes this old Celtic drinking ballad on a trip to east Africa, featuring funky polyrhythms and muted strings in 12/8. Titles include: Somebody Stole My Gal, A Sin To Tell A Lie, East St Louis Blues, Sadie Green (The Vamp of New Orleans), No Hiding Place, The Parting Glass

John Miller: Atlanta Blues Guitar

John Miller: Atlanta Blues Guitar

Atlanta, in the period 1920-1940, rivaled Memphis, St. Louis, Jackson and Chicago in the strength and vitality of its blues scene. It was home to a unique school of 12-string guitarists that included Blind Willie McTell, Barbecue Bob, Charlie Lincoln, Willie Baker and George Carter. Also on hand were the slick slide guitarist Fred McMullen, the accompaniment king, Curley Weaver and the spectacular up-and-comer, Buddy Moss. The scene was rounded out by an earlier generation of players, Peg Leg Howell foremost among them, who kept alive musical traditions that were in the eclipse.Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of recorded performances from the youthful Buddy Moss, a player who influenced generations of East Coast players that followed him, George Carter, a mysterious 12-string guitarist who recorded only four titles, Curley Weaver, a player's player, widely acknowledged to be among the finest accompanists in the blues, Julius Daniels, who came down from North Carolina to Atlanta to record early on and Peg Leg Howell, a bootlegger-turned musician who busked in the streets of Atlanta both as a soloist and in a trio with the fiddler Eddie Anthony and guitarist Henry Williams. The songs presented in the lesson will expand both your right hand techniques and your knowledge of the neck, with one song employing the almost never encountered Open B flat tuning.A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD, and contains all of the songs' lyrics as well as transcriptions of the Guitar parts. Also included are the original source recordings from which the transcriptions taught in the lesson were taken.Titles include Curley Weaver: Ticket Agent | George Carter: Rising River Blues | Buddy Moss: New Lovin? Blues and Oh Lordy Mama | Julius Daniels: 99 Year Blues | Peg Leg Howell: Turtle Dove Blues and Low-Down Rounder Blues

John Miller: Expanding Chordal Horizons

John Miller: Expanding Chordal Horizons

In Expanding Chordal Horizons, master guitarist/instructor John Miller returns to the topic of chord theory. Building on the foundation established in his previous set, Intro to Chord Theory and Chord Voicing, John starts from the assumption that the student has a working familiarity with voicing 7th and 6th chords up and down the neck in a variety of shapes. From there, it is a short step to hybrid 7th chords, 9th and 6 9 chords, 13th chords and chordal inversions, all of which are dealt with in disc one of the lesson. In the course of learning how to voice these different chord types, you?ll also learn their sounds, and how to use them in the context of a song. Along the way, John introduces a Bossa Nova picking pattern to expand your ability to provide rhythmic accompaniment. In the PDF study guide that accompanies the lesson, you will be provided with templates to create your own chordal diagrams for the new voicings you have been learning, and by diagramming the chords yourself, you?ll engage with the material and absorb and understand it in a way that never happens when simply taking chords from a chord dictionary or finding them on the Internet. Disc two builds on the lessons taught in disc one and further solidifies your command of the material. The songs that John has chosen as teaching vehicles have been selected for their qualities as teaching pieces, as well as their musical appeal. If you are interested in understanding how to get around on the guitar and voice chords up and down the neck, Expanding Chordal Horizons will get you well on your way. And the understanding that you build will equip you to problem solve and create your own voicings in the future as you encounter new songs or to utilize your new knowledge in your own songs and compositions. It?s exciting to venture into these new areas!
