The music on these two CD?s (51 tunes) has never been released before. The music is taken from 4 radio broadcasts in New York City in 1945 ? part live and part in the radio studio. Aside from providing great big band jazz for the radio audience, the point of these broadcasts was also for Duke Ellington to sell war bonds in the final year of World War II. The repertoire consists mostly of well-known Ellington numbers, plus a few rarities. These radio broadcasts are particularly important because commercial studio recordings were banned during World War II. One tune on CD 2 ? "I Miss Your Kiss", featuring the great trombone work of Lawrence Brown ? was never recorded commercially. Other highpoints are Johnny Hodges? smooth alto sax on "Mood to be Wooed", and Rex Stewart?s trumpet work on "Emancipation Celebration".

For many, their first hearing of Tatum was a transforming moment.This ten CD Tatum box contains over twelve hours of his music, almost all of it recorded live. On most of these occasions he was free to play what he wanted to for as long as he wished, to talk to his friends, and even sing along when the spirit moved him. His competitive spirit burst forth when he played with others. As always, the articulation and the conceptions were impeccable.The vast majority of the tracks on CD's one through nine have been previously issued only on the Storyville label. Twenty-one of the twenty-three tracks on CD ten included here have never been issued before.Because Art Tatum was legally blind, most written scores of his performances were first laboriously transcribed from disc recordings, and later from CDs. There is an almost cottage industry of pianists attempting to play some of these, or their own transcriptions. It is extraordinary that so many pianists have tried to play the music of Art Tatum, even though it was not composed by him. Of course, although Art was not a composer in the traditional sense, he was always re-composing the American popular song by creating new harmonies, textures, rhythms, and enhancements. All of the tracks on this CD were recorded live by Danish Radio at the Montmartre Club in Copenhagen on July 10 1984. There were many teams with two tenors: Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, Ben Webster and Red Holloway, Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, 'but I don?t believe any two-tenor unit stayed together so long and travelled the country as much as Johnny Griffin and I did' Eddie Davis told Stanley Dance. There was a marked contrast between the approaches of the two men. Davis, self-taught, modelled himself on Ben Webster at the outset, especially when playing ballads, and many have observed a Charlie-Parker like rhythmic quality in Griffin?s playing, particularly at faster tempos. In tandem they made an unbeatable team. On these tracks they are backed by Harry Pickens.

Bent Jædig is Denmark?s ?original be-bopper?, the first Danish jazz musician to completely embrace this style of jazz (in the early 50?s), and is still going strong, anno 2003. Jædig?s style is completely his own ? very personal, soulful and straightforward, and drenched in be-bop.

The music on this CD (69 min./10 tunes) has never been released before. The music was recorded live in a nightclub in Atlanta, Ga., in 1981, and features Zoot Sims with a top local rhythm section lead by pianist Yancey Korosi; local tenor sax-player Rick Bell sits in on the last three numbers Sims plays in an easy-swinging, mainstream jazz style, heavily influenced by Lester Young. The repertoire consists of tasty and tasteful standards, including tunes by Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Harold Arlen. As always, Zoot Sims uses his beautiful tone and lots of melody to tell his story, rather than firing off endless notes and runs. Mostly known for his tenor sax-playing, Sims also shows his fluency and warmth on soprano sax, for example on an up-tempo version of ?Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise?. Zoot Sims beautiful, warm tone and perfect phrasing stem from his major influence, Lester Young.

The great Icelandic jazz saxophonist Sigurður Flosason meets a great Danish rhythm section. ?The Danish jazz scene has always interested me and by a series of coincidences, I seem to be becoming a small part of it,? says Sigurður Flosason. Two Storyville recordings already witness Flosason?s ties with the Danish jazz scene. One is his collaboration with Hammond organist Kjeld Lauritsen on ?Nightfall? and the other is with singer Cathrine Legardh on ?Land & Sky?. Now Flosason has brought together what he calls ?a Danish dream team for this music? with Nikolaj Hess on Piano, Lennart Ginman on bass and Morten Lund on Drums. The Eleventh Hour features 10 new compositions by Flosason, recorded on one of his many happy trips to Copenhagen.Sigurður Flosason completed a solo performer?s examination in classical Saxophone from the Reykjavik Music Academy in 1983. He then studied under Eugene Rousseau and David Baker, completing a Bachelor of Music degree in classical Saxophone and jazz in 1986 and a Master of Music degree in these subjects in 1988. He then took private lessons from George Coleman in New York in 1988-89. Sigurður works in several different fields of music.

Carsten Dahl (Piano), Lennart Ginman (Bass) and Frands Rifbjerg (Drums) have played together for more than 20 years now and yet every time they play together, it still sounds completely fresh and new. The combination of the three of them is somehow a magic golden cut in terms of swing, balance, dexterity and imagination. In this particular session, the musicians just met in the studio and recorded the music. First takes, as usual - picking up some rough sketches that Carsten Dahl had composed on the spot that same day. There is a clear link to the trio’s first record Will you make my soup hot & silver from 1996 (Storyville Records, STCD4203). The inspiration from Carsten Dahl’ s heroes Bud Powell, Jan Johansson, Johann Sebastian Bach and many more is also easily detected. Carsten Dahl says: “ My dear mentor jazz pianist Ed Thigpen used to say that "you've got to be able to snap your finger to it" and I always try to keep that in mind. I try to discover the magic in space and the simplicity in the music: In rhythmical progressions and in lyrical melodies. It was in the 30s and 40s when the radio was the most important media before television took over. There were many different radio broadcasts all over USA. Live programs from different concerts and studio recordings. Count Basie had nightly broadcasts from Reno Club in Kansas City. When John Hammond heard a broadcast he went to Kansas City to hear the band in person. He then decided to bring it to New York City where they opened at the Roseland. To be regular featured on the radio was the best promotion an artist could get. Storyville has found many fine radio programs with various artists that will be released in the Legendary Radio Broadcasts series. Contents: COUNT BASIE The first 15 minutes of the oldest preserved broadcast from Chatterbox, Pittsburgh, February 10, 1937 are included on this CD. The titles are Moten Swing, King Porter Stomp, I?ll Always Be In Love With You, You do the Darnest Things, Baby and Swinging At The Daisy Chain. Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Walter Page, Jo Jones and vocalist Jimmy Rushing are members of the band.Two other broadcasts are included. CBS "American Dances" the complete broadcast, New York, July 9, 1938 and also the complete broadcast from Southland, Boston, 1940. Dicky Wells, Harry Edison and Helen Humes are now in the band.

In April 1945, to promote the sale of war bonds, the Treasury Department contracted Duke Ellington to do a series of 55 min public broadcasts. This double CD contains a series of recordings from Paramount Theatre and the famous Hurricane Club complete with radio speaks and encouragements to buy bonds + bonus material and extensive liner notes. CD 1 contains a radio broadcast from The Rehearsal Hall at Paramount Theatre, New York, June 1, 1946 plus bonus tracks from The Hurricane Club in New York, September 10, 1943. CD 2 features a broadcast from WEEU Studios, Reading, P.A., June 8, 1946. The last tracks are again from The Hurricane Club but from September 7, 1943. “ Big bands were dying off like the dinosaurs, but Ellington transcended Swing and its era. Television was in its developmental stage and by the 1950s would supersede radio. Duke Ellington would outlive the reign of the medium that he so well mastered”, writes Ken Steiner, author of the extensive liner notes, and concludes: ”The band must have been saving its best for this broadcast, which finds them in top form .” It is also worth noting that 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer and pianist William “Billy” Strayhorn. His contribution to the Ellington organisation can hardly be overstated and is evident on this CD, which also serves as a tribute to his genius. More than 35 years after his death Ben Webster's music remains fresh, contemporary and original; his distinctive sound still enchants and engages at each listening. The American tenor saxophonist came to Europe in 1964, at the relatively late age of 55, and never returned to the States. Webster had previously put off coming to Europe because of his intense fear of flying but when he finally arrived he was soon crowned King of Tenors by the thousands of fans who gave him their love and respect. Although he longed for his musical roots in the US he never went back; not only because of his fear of flying - he liked being in Europe. This 8CD box set has more than 10 hours of Ben Webster's music including previously unreleased tracks. The sessions were recorded mainly between 1964 and 1973 in Europe, mostly in Scandinavia, and include live recordings from festivals, clubs and radio and television broadcasts. They feature Webster at Copenhagen's famous Montmartre club and other Danish locations as well as sessions from his renowned month-long residency at London's Ronnie Scott's (his first job in Europe). Completing the set are recordings from Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Germany and several tracks recorded before he left New York. Webster is heard in various settings - from trios to big bands - in the company of contemporaries including Teddy Wilson, Clark Terry, Buck Clayton and Dexter Gordon. The booklet is illustrated with some great photos of Webster and gives a very personal insight from his closest friends and associates into his life and loves, his music and the colourful anecdotes that arose everywhere this remarkable musician went.

John Tchicai was excited when we presented our plans to release a double CD with material from his 2 Storyville LPs with three different sessions recorded in Denmark. One was recorded at Club Montmartre March 15, 1977 and another session in a studio in Copenhagen March 29, 1977 and the third session also in Copenhagen November 10 ? 14, 1987. John Tchicai took part in the project from the very beginning and also chose the liner note writer Andrey Henkin.John Tchicai began his career playing alto saxophone and ended it playing tenor saxophone.
