Sands Fonnesbaek Riel is comprised of young American pianist Christian Sands, Danish bassist Thomas Fonnesbaek and a Montmartre legend, drummer Alex Riel. The double CD Take One was recorded live at the famous Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen in October of 2014. The three musicians had never met before their performance, and to add to the pressure, Sands begins the performance with an unaccompanied intro to a ballad, immediately suggesting a confidence that never falters throughout the concert. Even on their first performance together, a musical connection was formed and consequently developed through the next two shows, allowing the best cuts to be collected for this enthralling CD.

Art Tatum Live: Volume One 1934-1944

This is the first of a nine-volume 18-track set, comprised primarily of previously unissued performances by the legendary jazz pianist, Art Tatum. This CD covers the years 1934 (the first year Tatum recorded) to 1944, with Tatum performing in solo, trio and quartet contexts. Most of the music (which is from the 40's) was produced for the Armed Forces Radio Service, who broadcast to the U.S. military during World War II. Besides the eight solo tunes, which include some of Tatum's first recordings from 1934, there are early tracks with Tatum's own famous trio, plus five tunes with the legendary jazz guitarist, Les Paul. The discovery of this unknown music by the greatest jazz pianist of all time is the musical equivalent of finding previously unpublished plays by William Shakespeare. While the tracks here are from the earlier part of Tatum's career, his astonishing technique and creative brilliance, his strong stride piano, blinding speed and virtuoso arpeggios, are all impressively showcased here.Featuring Slam Stewart and Clinton Nordquist on bass. Dexter Gordon: Atlanta Georgia May 5, 1981

This is the first-time release of a live session with the Dexter Gordon quartet from a club in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1981. There are seven tunes and 79 minutes of playing time on the CD. Dexter Gordon is accompanied by his regular superstar rhythm section of Kirk Lightsey, Rufus Reid and Eddie Gladden. The repertoire consists of both jazz standards, ballads and original compositions by Gordon and pianist George Cables. The band is clearly inspired by the enthusiasm of the audience at E.J.?s in Atlanta, who came to see their hero, Dexter Gordon ? one of the most important modern jazz saxophonists of all time. The rhythm section also plays brilliantly and is given plenty of playing time on these long numbers. As pianist Kirk Lightsey said: ?Being with Dexter Gordon was probably the greatest lesson ? one to one ? that I?ve had in playing jazz.? Sit back and enjoy one of the best modern tenor sax players ? and rhythm sections ? in modern jazz. Particular high points on the CD are ?Tangerine? and the wailing ?Jumpin? Blues?.

The music on this CD (8 tunes; 67 min) has never been previously released. The CD contains three sessions with tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, recorded live at the Stampen jazz club in Stockholm, in 1969, 1971 and 1973. On each of these quintet sessions he is joined by at least one of the following major jazz stars: pianist Teddy Wilson, trumpeter Roffe Ericson, bassist Red Mitchell or drummer Ed Thigpen. The repertoire consists of five standard favorites which Webster played as a member of the Duke Ellington orchestra, plus one bebop tune. The numbers average over eight minutes in length, allowing Ben and his fellow soloists to really stretch out. Ben Webster was obviously enjoying himself on these gigs - one can hear him shouting out approval to his group members - and you will, too.

Dave Swarbrick originally played with the well-known Ian Campbell Folk Group, and was a member of the famous folk-rock group Fairport Convention at the time of this recording. Dave Swarbrick’s rowdy style and fine, jazz-tinged violin playing are a joy to hear. The style of the music is passionate and earthy. Dave Swarbrick is an outstanding example of the British folk revival of the 70’s, and one of the first to leave England for the European continent, where he wound up settling in Denmark.

This CD is a collection of classic melodies from the repertoire of Ben Webster?s famous employer of many years, Duke Ellington. The CD is compromised of three live radio sessions with the Danish Radio Big Band In 1969 & 1971, plus three live concert sessions with three different backing-trios (Finland in 1967, Denmark in 1969 and Sweden in 1972). Two of the tracks ? with Clark Terry, Kenny Drew, Red Mitchell and Bobby Brooks ? are previously unissued. Aside from one tune. All the performances with the Danish Radio Big Band are Based on Ellington?s original scores. The quartet sessions are also great, including two ?reunions? ? one with Ben?s boss from the early 30?s, Teddy Wilson, and the other with fellow Ellington alumnus Clark Terry. That Ben Webster was one of the undisputed jazz-greats on the tenorsaxophone- both in a big band and small group context ? is amply demonstrated on this fine CD.

On May 1, 2010, Jazzhus Montmartre reopened in its original premises at Store Regnegade 19A, where so many jazz icons and trendsetting musicians performed from 1959 until the club closed in 1976. With the revival of the original close atmosphere and great acoustics, Montmartre has successfully resurrected its reputation as one of Europe?s best jazz clubs, and one where musicians love to play. Nikolaj Bentzon belongs to one of the strongest generations in Danish jazz, having helped lead it in new directions throughout the 1990s. Ever since his first trio with Thomas Ovesen and Jonas Johansen, Nikolaj Bentzon has covered a lot of musical territory but always left a deep impression. These two evenings in May 2013 saw a return to Bentzon?s first love ? the classic Piano trio - with Thomas Fonnesbæk on Bass and Winard Harper on Drums. The line-up was new and the energy phenomenal ? something everybody at the time couldn?t help but notice.

This is the second CD in Storyville's series of Danish tenor saxophonist Jesper Thilo's small group sessions in Copenhagen in the 1980's. This 61 minute CD (11 tunes) was recorded in Hamburg in Oct. 2002. The band is comprised of four top European musicians - three Germans and one Dane. Half of the tunes are original compositions, the rest are older jazz standards ("Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans" and Duke Ellington's "Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues"), and newer jazz standards ("Groove Merchant"), also including some latin inspiration ("O Grande Amor"). Guitarist Ulf Meyer has a fine, flowing feel, sometimes reminiscent of Pat Metheny. Alex Riel, from Denmark, is one of the best and most famous drummers in Europe today. The four musicians on this CD are highly compatible, making the music sound effortless and relaxed.

This is the CD release of Alex Campbell?s second LP for Storyville Records, twelve tunes recorded live in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, in 1967. The Scottish folk guitarist and singer was the first to actually earn a living playing folk music, and was one of the first to leave Britain for the Continent, eventually settling in Denmark. The genre is contemporary ? rather than traditional ? folk music, with tunes by Paul Simon, Tom Paxton, Bob Dylan and Bert Jansch, among others, and only one Alex Campbell original. Alex Campbell is a modern European folk legend who helped shape the British and European modern folk scenes in the sixties. The music has an edge; Campbell sings songs from real life: about drugs and rambling, loneliness and love.

Kenny Drew (piano), Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass) and Ed Thigpen (drums) ? world renowned for the backing they gave to many American giants who were so well supported on their visits to Denmark. Their eloquence, like Zoot?s, speaks for itself. Pianist Jimmy Rowles, who played in Zoot?s quartet, went to some trouble to work up a library of lesser known songs which would suit the tenorist and In The Middle Of A Kiss, included on this CD, is one of the ones he chose.
