The music on this double-CD (19 tunes, 1hour 45 min.) has never been previously released; it was recorded live in Zurich, Switzerland in 1949. Although normally a solo performer, Willie "The Lion" Smith performs here in a trio setting. The repertoire includes original compositions, Fats Waller and Clarence Williams tunes, Gershwin, blues and traditional jazz classics, spirituals, and even Chopin?s "Polonaise". Smith employs a unique blend of ragtime, impressionism and counterpoint, while combining subtle, melodic lines with intense swing. Here is "live" proof that Willie "The Lion" Smith was one of the most original, humorous and unpredictable jazz pianists of the 20th Century, as well as possibly the best "stride" pianist ever. Smith and the trio are in an instant groove from the very first tune of this 105 minute-long concert, and they never stop swinging. Smith never uses clichés - even very well-known tunes sound fresh and new. This CD is a must for all Willie "The Lion" Smith fans; Smith, himself, says of the music: "This was a very good concert. We played for each other and together and were perfectly relaxed".

Of the five Radio sessions represented on this release, four of them contain Stuff Smith teaming up with fellow violinists Ray Nance and Danes Svend Asmussen, Søren Christensen and Poul Olsen, three of these have never been released before.On April 4, 1965 Stuff Smith participated in a radio jubilee concert. Only recently has a mislabeled, long thought lost tape been recovered from the Timme Rosenkrantz archive. The astute listener will question the absence of drummer Alex Riel. There was confusion about the start time of Smith's set following an interval and Riel failed to appear. Thus, we have a rare glimpse of a late Smith trio with just Piano and Bass. Riel, as good a drummer as he is, is really not missed. And that's Stuff tapping on the violin? In an act of generosity, Smith introduces "Timme's Blues" as written by his friend and manager Timme Rosenkrantz. This CD was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, and consists of a live concert in Jazzhus Montmartre in 1965 and a radio studio session (with violinist Svend Asmussen) in 1966. The repertoire on the CD (74 min./13 tunes) consists of some standards (George & Ira Gershwin, Kurt Weil, Duke Ellington) and five Stuff Smith originals. The two rhythm groups are comprised of top Danish jazz musicians, plus the American piano star, Kenny Drew. The relatively long playing-time of the tracks allows Stuff Smith, Svend Asmussen and Kenny Drew to do some extended soloing. Many jazz fans will agree that Stuff Smith is the best jazz violinist of all time, and this CD presents him at his very best. The overwhelming energy, creativity, drive and humor in his performance is further enhanced by an unmatched musical virtuosity.

Clarence Williams (1893 - 1965) was an American jazz musician, who tried his hand (successfully) in almost all spheres of the music industry: he was known as a pianist, composer, promoter, vocalist, theatrical producer, and publisher. Having run away from home at age 12 to join a travelling show, he settled in New Orleans and became a well-regarded entertainer, while also composing new songs. After touring as a musician, he started a music publishing company and a record label, producing and participating in early recordings by Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Bessie Smith, Virginia Liston, Irene Scruggs, and many others. The Clarence Williams Collection – Volume 3 covers Williams' prolific output from 1929-30. Transferred and re-mastered by John R.T. Davis, the sound quality is outstanding.

Known in New York and Denmark as the Jazz Baron, baron Niels Otte Timme Rosenkrantz was a man of many talents and many friends. On this CD, we find exclusive recordings of some of the grand musicians of Harlem’s golden jazz age – most of it recorded in Timmy’s (as the Americans nicknamed him) private Manhattan apartment, where the jazz society came to party and play. This CD features tracks performed by renowned artists such as Stuff Smith, Thelonious Monk, Don Byas and pianist Erroll Garner, whom Timme Rosenkrantz is actually credited for discovering and being the first to record. The CD is the first ever release of these private recordings from the mid-1940s. Carefully selected from the archives at the Music Library of the University of Southern Denmark by experts, the old tracks have been digitally cleaned and remastered, providing us an array of interesting material. Timme’s Treasures features extraordinary gems from a riveting epoch of jazz, and the CD is an unexpectedly recovered treasure chest, teaching us an important history lesson on musicality.

The 29 tunes on this CD (70 min. playing time) were recorded in Hollywood in 1949. The musical repertoire is mostly popular tunes of the 40?s ? compositions by Irving Berlin, Rogers & Hart, the Gershwins, Count Basie and Kurt Weill, among others, plus three originals by Guarnieri. The musical style is mainstream swing jazz. June Christy had been vocalist with the Stan Kenton Orchestra (and would be again in the 50?s), when these recordings were made. Guarnieri first came to prominence with Artie Shaw in 1940, and had also played with Tommy Dorsey, Lester Young, Ben Webster and Louis Armstrong ? among many others ? in the 40?s, previous to making these recordings. June Christy was one of the greatest singers in swing jazz; she won the Downbeat poll four times in the late 40?s for best female vocalist with a big band. Her main influences being Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington and Anita O?Day (her predecessor in the Stan Kenton Orchestra), June Christy had a breathy, husky voice, which is used to wonderful effect on this CD. Johnny Guarnieri?s musical influence comes from Art Tatum and Willie ?The Lion? Smith, and helped make him a master of the ?stride? style of piano-playing.

Svend Asmussen celebrates his 100th birthday on February 28, 2016. Storyville Records celebrates the Danish Jazz legend's centenary with a 5 CD and 1 DVD box set which explores his musical production through the years. The first CD features early 1937-1944 recordings, where Asmussen finally decided on music as his occupation for life and began gaining international recognition with his elegant swing and refined arrangements. The second CD features 1953 and 1958 recordings from Hamburg, where Asmussen ’s profound musicality and jazz skillfulness shine. On CD3, Asmussen collaborates with violinist colleague Stephane Grappelli, and their different phrasings compliment each other. We also find previously unreleased tracks from a 1985 Paris session with the Georges Arvanitas Trio, a complement to the critically acclaimed “Embraceable” concert CD from the same occasion. On CD4, Asmussen and American legend Stuff Smith play a concert together in Copenhagen, the two clearly enjoying each other’s company. CD5 features the renowned 1996 concert “Fit as a Fiddle”, where Asmussen masterfully combines the insistent energy of his youth with the experience and musical grandeur he has gained from a lifetime of playing. The Duke Box 2 picks up the story of the great Duke Ellington band in the early 1950s and spans the next twenty years or so of a remarkable output. This collection is to some extent shaped by the advent of the LP and the longer tracks it enabled and encouraged. That technological shift came in a period when Ellington would lose the three of his stellar sidemen: Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown and Sonny Greer. As it turned out, their replacements (Willie Smith, Britt Woodman and Louie Bellson) and other new blood only served to re-energise the band as it approached the 25th anniversary of its initial engagement at The Cotton Club. The box set includes a high-quality 27-page booklet including a large selection of never before seen photos of The Duke and his band members in their prime time. Spanning the years in which Ellington regularly toured Europe and Scandinavia, The Duke Box 2 offers a rich selection of performances illustrating a tirelessly inventive musical spirit on tour with changing personnel and occasional guest artists. CD3 features never before released live recordings from a 1963 concert in Gröna Lund, Stockholm—a veritable treasure for the committed Ellington fan. The box also includes the well-renowned Jaywalker (CD5) and Piano Player (CD4) albums whose music always deserves a re-visiting. Among other gems are late 1970s recordings from New York, some of the last music Ellington ever put out. The bonus DVD combines a series of short films of the Ellington band in action and despite the sound being recorded first and the performances showing the band miming, this curiosum offers a fascinating glimpse of The Duke in action, and the audio is of course technically excellent. The achievement of Duke Ellington exists on a variety of levels. The closer you examine it, the more complex and multi-faceted it appears to be. The first great composer of jazz, the most popular African-American bandleader, the influential pianist, who made light of his piano contribution, the magician who assisted the musical formation of several key individual contributors but who nevertheless retained the identity of his band over a 50-year period. As a portrait of a sublime and inexhaustible musician thriving in the second half of a long and distinguished career, The Duke Box 2 is surely a must-have collection for all true admirers of the inimitable Duke Ellington !
