The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was one of the leading members of the Nationalist school that dominated Spanish music at the turn of the last century. One of his better known works is Espana (Op. 165), a suite of six pieces for solo Piano which he composed in 1890. The third of these was Malaguena , which draws heavily on Andalusian music and culture, particularly from the city of Malaga. One of his best known works is the Suite Espanola (Op.47); a collection of works for solo Piano inspired by different regions and musical cultures of Spain, first published in 1887. Castilla was included after his death by a publisher, and taken from an earlier work. It is a piece for solo Piano in the Seguidilla style, which traces its origins to a Castilian folk dance.

The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was one of the leading members of the Nationalist school that dominated Spanish music at the turn of the last century. Cordoba was the fourth in a collection of 5 songs for the Piano inspired by different places in Spain, published in 1898 as Cantos de España (Op. 232). The city of Cordoba is said to be Albeniz’ favourite city, and is home to the famous Great Mosque. The music reflects the rich history of the city, both Christian and Moorish. Cordoba has been transcribed for Guitar by Miguel Angel. It has become one of the staples of the modern Guitar repertoire.

The Romance Anonimo (Anonymous Romance) is a simple, familiar and well-loved work that is, in one version or another, in the repertoire of virtually every classical Guitarist. As with many seemingly simple works, a good level of technical ability and musicianship is required to create a performance worthy of the music.The piece is known by many names, Spanish Romance, Romance de Espana, Romance of the Guitar, and Study in E by Rubira. Similarly, the authorship is unsettled, though Miguel Llobet is one of the names to which the piece is credited. The earliest known recording was a wax cylinder made sometime around 1900. Whoever wrote Romance Anonimo, it is a lovely piece, beloved of audiences and Guitarists alike.

In this version published by the Spanish Musical Union in 1945, the song has been adapted for solo Piano and the key transposed from B flat to C.Schubert’s Ave Maria was originally composed in 1825 as one of seven songs created from the epic poem The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott, written to set the German translation of the work. The song was fairly quickly adapted for the words of the Catholic prayer Ave Maria and the Schubert melody is now frequently performed in the religious context.
