Love (of the sort that I'm after)

A short work for tenor and piano setting the text of Laura Mucha. The work was commissioned by the Prince Consort and premiered by Andy Staples and Alisdair Hogarth at St. Swithin's, Bath, UK as part of the BathSongs Series at The Bath Festival on the 27th May 2017.

The final piece in this approachable suite of miniatures for solo instrument and Piano to be composed. The Liason was composed with a 'Romeo and Juliet' sort of scenario in mind.

Burgon: First Was The World (Vocal Score)

Quoting Burgon: My first thought on receiving this commission was what sort of text would suit. Something on the general idea of growth - starting very small and blossoming was the obvious way to go, but it wasn?t until I found the Andrew Marvell poem Music?s Empire that I really got going. The poem is about the invention and development of music; this might sound a bit dry, but in fact it is both charming and dramatic, and it is also apt in that it can be set for both solo voice and chorus.The other factor to be considered in writing this piece was the Purcell connection. Purcell wrote Come Ye Sons of Art in 1964, the year the bank was founded, and this piece is also included in the celebratory concert. So I wanted to include some homage to HP as well.Marvell?s poem is the sort of text that Purcell might have set had he come across it. It is a sort of Ode of text that Purcell might have set had he come across it. It is a sort of Ode to St Cecelia and he wrote one of those as we know. So I have referred to Purcell in two particular ways; I have quoted Come Ye sons of Art directly, and I have used the countertenor. Purcell himself sang countertenor in many of his own pieces, and wrote some of the most gorgeous music ever written for that voice. I also happened to love both Purcell?s music and the countertenor so writing this piece was really a labour of love.It is scored for countertenor, mixed chorus and symphony of orchestra - rather larger than any orchestra that Purcell had access to as far as I know, but one in which I?m sure he would have revelled in given the opportunity. It is about ten minutes in duration.

Elizabeth Maconchy: Five Sketches For Viola Solo

'Five Sketches' was commissioned by Nicholas Logie and first performed by him on 31 May 1984 at the Wigmore Hall.Quoting Maconchy: I have always had a particular affection for the viola with its dark tone-colour and its unlimited expressive range.I have tried in these pieces to explore that range and to make them well varied in rhythm and content.The note E which the work begins and ends serves as a sort of ?point d?appui? all through.'

Robert Schumann: Fantasiestucke Op.12

Schumann's Eight Fantasiestücke, Op.12 (1837) together constitute one of the composer's finest and most representative works. Intended to be played as an intact group, the set retains enough typical dance forms to be regarded as a sort of dance suite, though the pieces are longer and more complex than those of "true" dance suites like Carnaval, Op.9 (1833 - 35) and Davidsbündlertanze, Op.6 (1837). Most of the pieces are constructed in novel permutations of rounded binary and ternary forms; nearly all have contrasting, trio-like middle sections.

Henry Purcell: Chacony In G Minor For Strings (Parts)

There are three mysteries about this piece by Purcell originally scored for Viols. When it was written, for what purpose it was written, and why the eccentric title ‘Chacony’ rather than the French ‘chaconne’ are questions whose answers are all shrouded in the mists of time. The suggested dates of early 1680’s and as a piece of light music for some sort of theatrical performance almost answer two of the three questions. The Chacony is scored here for String quartet, but could be played by a larger ensemble.

Albeniz: Aragon Fantasia for Piano Four Hands

This work was written early in Albeniz’s life, when he had established himself in the musical life of Madrid, had toured to Paris and London and was well-known as a pianist and composer. The Aragón Fantasia is an idiomatic work, the sort of delightfully inspired salon Piano piece he was able to compose quite quickly.Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860 - 1909) was one of Spain’s foremost musicians, a world-renowned soloist, contributing to the rebirth of Spanish musical nationalism and gaining international recognition for the music of Spain.

Romanian Folk Dances

Bartók’s Rumanian Folk Dances, composed in 1915, are among his best-known works. They exist in multiple forms, since as well as several piano arrangements and a later orchestral version of his own there also exist arrangements by his contemporaries that were made with his consent. Today we can even access performances of the dances by Bartók himself; these recordings document varied repeats enriched by octave doublings to make a sort of “concert version” of the dances. Bartók expert László Somfai brings order to the rich fund of sources, and in Henle’s Urtext edition enters significant variants directly into the musical text itself.

Am Horizont For Viola With Voice

In spring 2020, coronavirus began spreading throughout the world and in many places people were subjected to quarantine. It was then that Hiyoli Togawa, a violist, proposed that the BIS record label release a viola disc entitled Songs of Solitude of short compositions by different contemporary composers, as a sort of reflection of the present time and offering comfort to listeners in their solitude. Hiyoli asked Kalevi Aho (b. 1949) to compose a piece in which she could play and sing simultaneously. The meditative, melancholy Am Horizont is dedicated to Hiyoli Togawa and composed in April 2020. Duration: c. 5'30''.

Nico Muhly: Three Songs (For Tenor, Violin And Drone)

Three Songs was expertly composed by Nico Muhly . There is a two-note drone that sounds throughout this piece?s 15-minute duration. In the first part of the songs, the Tenor and the Violin exchange lyrical and declamatory statements. The second part is a song without words: a sort of dance for solo Violin. The third part has the Violin intoning a pair of notes while the tenor sings, in essence, a list. The work was commissioned by violinist Tatiana Berman on French surrealist poems of her choosing, and was premiered at the Constella Festival in Cincinnati in 2012.

Trombone Concerto

The Concerto Op.85 in B minor for tenor trombone, was composed for one of the “Gambara” Musical Lycée, Edoardo Paletti. The first problem was to conceive a concert piece that could unify the usual three movements, but without being too long. So the composer decided to write a concerto in one movement, divided in three parts: the first (Allegro marziale), is a Sonata-form exposition, starting with a martial theme always in anacrusis, to which follows a second theme in jazz style. After a short coda, the second movement begins (Andante maestoso), a sort of funeral march, preparing the atmosphere for the first part recapitulation, with an intense and virtuosic Coda.

El remanso del pitido has been commissioned by the London Sinfonietta for the London Sinfonietta Chorus who give the first performance this evening.It is a work of nostalgia, a lament for the decline of steam engines - the stillness of the whistle. Based mainly on a poem by the Spanish writer, Gregorio Corral.The setting is for twelve voices, eight of them singing through close microphones. The work is fourth in a series of pieces derived from 13th Century homophonic Spanish cantigas and canciones. The final series of works will form a sort of song-book, the composer's own accounts of early Spanish music. The idea of a song-book is contained in the title of the first work of the series, Cancionero para una mariposa.
