Intermezzo : from the opera Notre Dame

The Intermezzo from the Romantic opera Notre Dame, based on Victor Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is in fact Franz Schmidt’s best-known work. The charm of this lovely composition lies in its Hungarian and Romantic influences. Wil van der Beek’s sensitive arrangement does justice to this great work, putting Franz Schmidt’s masterpiece back in the spotlight once more!

Siorai September : (Gaelic: Eternal September)

Translated from Gaelic as “Eternal September,” this marvelous setting for band is designed to take each listener back to their own vivid fall memories on a college campus. Commissioned by the University of Notre Dameand premiered at their Carnegie Hall performance in 2010, this work is also dedicated to the composer's father, Dr. Samuel J. Hazo, a 1949 graduate of Notre Dame. Additionally, Dr. Hazo's poem “Home Are the Sailors”is incorporated in the middle of the piece. Rich in musical references and varied textures, this is a dramatic and rewarding work for mature ensembles. Dur: c. 5:30

Dance Party

For the theatrical show Die pet past ons allemaal! (This Cap Fits Us All!) Peter Kleine Schaars arranged a medley of well-known Dutch children’s songs, commissioned by the Dutch Police Orchestra. He gave these tunes a totally new sound, so they evolved into a real Dance Party. The exciting rhythms of the different styles (house, swing, salsa, rock-shuffle and disco) will undoubtedly create a party mood amongst your audience.

Fostedina : De Sage van de Gouden Kap

The legend of ‘Fostedina and the golden hood’ is about the imprisonment of archbishop Willibrord (658-739), ‘Apostle to the Frisians’, and several dozen Danes converted to Christianity. The young woman Fostedina took pity on them and liberated them. As a punishment, she had to stand the entire day in the market square with a crown of thorns on her head. The thorns left severe scars, but on her wedding day she was given a golden cap that covered her scars: the later ear iron.

Three Onegin Dances

Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However, we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as ¬Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin), composed in 1877-1878, was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself, but “lyric scenes”. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However, there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes, for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise.After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant, this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz, which can beconsidered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera, this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.

Town of the Seven Hills : Suite for Brass Ensemble and Percussion

This suite tells the story of the French town ‘Tulle’ in the ‘Nouvelle-Aquitaine’. Tulle was built on seven hills, just like Rome and Lisbon, and is beautifully situated on the river Corrèze. The first movement opens with a stately introduction, which is followed by a historic march through the streets of Tulle. We pass Notre Dame cathedral and the characteristic houses from the Middle Ages and Renaissance period, i.e. the ‘Maison de Loyac’. Tulle was once the centre of the production of ‘tulle’, a net-like fabric that is named after this town. This is what the second movement is all about, and at certain moments the music sounds very graceful because tulle is often used as a material for ballet skirts and wedding dresses. The third movement was written to commemorate the blood bath of Tulle in June 1944. During a retaliatory action by the German SS, a large number of Tulle’s citizens were killed. The emotions expressed here are a combination of grief and comfort. In the last movement, the festive sounds of the annual fair held in May on the ‘Champs de Mars’ and the ‘Place de la Cathédrale’, can be heard.
