‘Martenizza’ is the Bulgarian word for the month March. This work describes an old custom in Bulgaria introduced to the composer was through Ivo Stoykov, a Bulgarian acquaintance. In accordance with tradition good friends give each other a number of white and red pennants on the 1st of March. When a stork has been spotted for the first time in March, the pennants are hung in a tree, and one can make a wish. According to the custom, friends wish each other health and happiness for the coming year.

Inspired by a painting by German artist Paul Klee [1879 - 1940], this work forms the third movement of The Venetian Collection. Completely different than the other parts of the cycle, this movement illustrates Klee's colorful,naive dream world by means of a fragile, transparent texture, bringing the woodwinds into the limelight. This piece was inspired by a variety of music such as Broadway musicals, French cancan, and circus marches. A special rhythm pattern called “Ipponjime” (or “Sanbonjime”) is played by the percussion (3 + 3 + 3 + 1) in the first four measures.This is how people freely clap their hands when ceremonies or parties end in Japan. This custom of clapping hands reflects Japanese people’s spirit to readily move on to the next step. As the infectious work comes to its exciting conclusion every player shouts “yeah!”ensuring you will definitely hear rapturous applause!

However, the UK blues explosion of the 1960s changed everything and these guitars would begin to shape the music for generations to come. The USA quickly picked up this new direction and players such as Mike Bloomfield and Duane Allman then used the Bursts to great effect. Demand for the guitar began in earnest in the 1970s and they now fetch astronomical prices. The Gibson Custom Shop is working diligently on many aspects of their historic Les Pauls bringing them as close to the originals as possible. Not only did the playersmake this the most collectable guitar in the vintage market but collectors and weekend players played a huge role in its cimb to the top. Visually, it is probably one of the most beautiful solid body guitars ever made.
