Based on the orchestral part of the play Es War einmal… (Once Upon a Time…) for narrator, actors, children’s choir and wind band, there’s now an ‘enchanted’ suite for band only — Grimm’s Fairytale Forest, based on four famous tales ofthe Brothers Grimm. Some of the most colourful and varied themes and melodies from Once Upon a Time… reappear in this lovely instrumental suite by Jan Van der Roost. Welcome to the enchanted forest!

Pride of the Forest

Pride of the Forest reflects the pride that is associated with the character of the people who live in the Fryske W lden (‘The Frisian Woods’), a region in the northeast of the Dutch province of Friesland. Generally speaking, the inhabitants are tough, stalwart, straightforward, tenacious, honest and most of all, proud. During the piece the typical landscape as well as all characteristics of the Frisian people are described in a fantastic and colourful way. A lovely piece for your contest or concert!

Volcano

Volcano is a work commissioned by the Municipal Wind Orchestra of Endingen in Germany. The three creative impulses which provided the basis for this symphonic poem are inspired by outside sources. They are closed linked with the history of the Orchestra and the region in which it performs. In this region is the Kaiserstuhl, an enormous rock situated on the edge of the Black Forest. Volcano is a stimulating, lyrical, brilliant and festive work.

Extreme Beethoven : Metamorphoses on themes by Ludwig van Beethoven

Extreme Beethoven is based on a similar concept as its illustrious predecessor, Extreme Makeover. Melodies from Beethoven’s great treasure trove of themes and motifs are quoted, embellished, compressed, repeated in minimalistic patterns, contrapuntally treated or placed within a new context. This unusual work stems from Johan de Meij’s deep admiration for one of the greatest composers of all time.

Autumn is depicted with hunting horns playing in the forest, followed by a pastoral melody, principally in the woodwinds. Winter in the mountains is poetic and romantic. Spring arrives with a frolicsome and playful theme mirroring the start of new life. Soon everything flowers lushly, and the music swells into the full sounding energy of summer, bringing the work to a brilliant and dynamic close. A great work for any time of year.

Prevision (CD incl.) : Rhapsody for Concert Band

The work Prevision has been composed in a free fantasy form. Deep in thought the composer sketches his prevision - the development of his small grandson growing up to be an adult. After a brilliant introduction, a slow march follows, whichsymbolises the first steps toward adulthood. Aspects such as love and a sense of security, that are indispensable for a positive development, are presented in a calm middle section, after which an energetic closing part refers to the rebelliousnessof an adolescent. The grand finale of Prevision expresses the grandfather’s and composer’s positive picture of the future.

Colossus

The giant Haymon was a peaceful knight who lived in Inntal (Austria). One day the bloodthirsty giant Thyrsos came and destroyed Haymon’s castle. A horrible fight ensued and Haymon, being the better armed, was victorious and slew his adversary. But instead of rejoicing in his success, Haymon felt deep remorse. This remorse led him to seek out a monk and become a Christian, upon which he immediately started building a monastery. Once completed, Haymon joined the monastic order. Two statues at the monastery’s entrance stand in remembrance of his victory. A colossal new work for concert band.

A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

This major concert work cosists o five movements.1st movement: La Laguna del ShimbeSituated high up in the Andes mountains in Northern Peru are the Huaringas, a group of lagoons in isolated and mysterious surroundings. The water has healing powersand for centuries traditional healers have settled there in small villages. From far the sick come to the Huaringas to be treated in nightly rituals, in which the hallucinating juice of the San Pedro cactus gives the prophet a look inside hispatient. The biggest lagoon is the “Laguna del Shimbe”, one of the countless wells of the immense Amazon stream.2nd movement: Los AguarunasFurther downstream in Northern Peru we come across the rain tribe of Los Aguarunas. It’s a proud, beautiful andindependent race, which has never succumbed to domination, not even from the Incas. They live from everything the forest has to offer: fish, fruit, plants, ... . They also grow some crops and live as semi-nomads. They take their fate into their ownhands and after having made contact with modern civilisation, they have integrated new elements into their lives without betraying their own ways.3rd movement: MekaronMekaron is an Indian word meaning “picture”, “soul”, “essence”. The Indians are theorigina inhabitants of the Amazon region. They either live in one place as a group or move around a large region. They all have their own political system, their own language and an intense social life. At the same time they are master of music andmedicine. “Everywhere the white man goes, he leaves a wilderness behind him”, wrote the North American Indian leader Seatl in 1885. As a result of these contacts with the whites, the disruption of most Indian societies began. (In this century alone,80 tribes have vanished completely).4th movement: KêêtuajêThis is the name of the initiating ceremony of the Krahô tribe in the Brazilian state of Goias, in which young boys and girls enter adult life. They are cleansed with water, painted with redpaint and covered with feathers, after which the ritual dance holds the entire tribe spell-bound.5th movement: Paulino FaiakanIn 1988 the Indian chiefs Faiakan and Raoni Kaiapo came to Europe to protest against the building of the Altamira dam inBrazil. As a result of the dam the Indians would be driven from their traditional land and enormous artificial would be created. The project was supported financially by, amongst others, the European Community. In February 1989 the Indian tribesaround Altamira held a protest march for the first time in their history together. Amongst other things they paid tribute tot Chico Mendez, who, murdered in 1988, was the leader of the rubber syndicate and a fierce opponent of the destruction of theBrazilian rain forest. Brazilian and world opinion was awakened. The building of the dam was -albeit temporarily - stopped.

Suite Pastorale : Op. 61

Suite Pastorale, made up of three movements - Idyll, Playful Shepherd Boys, Rain Upon the Fields - is characterized by an idealization of the simplicity of country life in close contact with nature. Suite Pastorale depicts the eternal and fascinating myth of Arcadia: a world in which man lives in harmony with nature, immersed in bucolic forest landscapes, one of the most important imaginary places to escape to for those who were, and still are, tired of culture and civilization. The evocative Arcadian world is made almost mythological by the attention dedicated to it by poets, writers, playwrights, painters, and composers who over the centuries have drawn lifeblood from it for their works. Full of metaphorical meanings, it is a place of shelter, a place to live and sing about love, even if it means disappointment, and it is the place of civilization opposed to barbarism. It is a symbol of happiness, a real and intact image of reality, motionless in space and time, where nothing changes. The myth of the "locus amoenus" has not disappeared but has kept all its charm intact over the centuries. Suite Pastorale was commissioned to Franco Cesarini by the concert band of Aldeno (Trento/Italy) for the 100th anniversary of its foundation (1923-2023. Suite Pastorale: an ideal concert piece that will delight your audience!

Poul Ruders: The Thirteenth Child - A Fairytale Opera In Two Acts (Score)

The Thirteenth Child - A Fairytale Opera In Two Acts by Poul Ruders (2014-15). Libretto by Becky Starobin and David Starobin. Scenario by Becky Starobin. Suggested by 'The Twelve Brothers' by the Brothers Grimm. SYNOPSIS Act 1, Scene 1 The neighboring Kingdoms of Frohagord and Hauven are in crisis. Following a warning by his embittered cousin Drokan, Regent of Hauven, King Hjarne of Frohagord is convinced that his twelve sons are plotting to overthrow him. The twelve princes, oblivious to their father's paranoia, play in the courtyard. The enraged King threatens the safety of his sons, telling his pregnant wife, Queen Gertrude, that she must provide him with a female heir, as "only she shall wear the crown".  Gertrude calms Hjarne and they sing of the Lilies of Frohagord, magical flowers that protect the kingdom.  When Benjamin, the youngest prince, innocently plucks a lily from the garden, Hjarne flies into a mad rage and strikes Gertrude.  Drokan, observing the encounter, admits his love for Gertrude and feels "the trembling of the earth". Act 1, Scene 2 Eighteen years have passed and King Hjarne has just died. At Hjarne's funeral Frederic, Drokan, and the mourners tell of the mysterious disappearance of the King's thirteen children and the shadows that haunt the kingdom. Queen Gertrude, now mortally ill, and her daughter, Princess Lyra, enter the Royal Chapel. Gertrude is repelled by the sight of Drokan, while Frederic is drawn to Lyra. Drokan plots to usurp the Kingdom of Frohagord and Frederic dreams of the day when Lyra will be his. Act 1, Scene 3 Queen Gertrude is on her deathbed, attended by Princess Lyra.  Lyra asks her mother why she was sent away.  Gertrude has Lyra open a secret drawer where Lyra finds twelve shirts embroidered with the red Lilies of Frohagord. Gertrude reveals that the shirts belong to her missing brothers, who were sent to the forest, taking the lily bulbs with them.  Before dying, Gertrude begs Lyra to find her brothers and heal the family's wounds.  Lyra vows to find the twelve Princes.   Act 2, Scene 1 Lyra wanders through an enchanted forest, coming upon a cottage with twelve lilies in bloom. She encounters Benjamin, whom she learns is the youngest of her brothers. In the distance the older brothers are heard as they return home from a hunt.  Benjamin, who fears that his brothers will seek revenge against Lyra, hides her. After his brothers assure him that they will do no harm, Benjamin reveals Lyra, much to the joy of all. Preparing for a celebratory feast, Lyra cuts the red lilies, unintentionally casting a spell that transforms her brothers into ravens. She is devastated by her tragic mistake. Act 2, Scene 2 Queen Gertrude appears as an apparition and tells Lyra that in order for her brothers to return to human form, she must remain mute for seven years. Act 2, Scene 3 Almost seven years have passed, and Frederic's search for Lyra is rewarded. A great wedding celebration is planned by the people of Hauven.
